Description
Human detective Raul Latell Satoru operates within the Division of Space Piracy (DSP), partnered with Apulo, a cat-like alien possessing emotion-locking psi abilities. Their investigative methods frequently cause excessive collateral damage and property destruction, surpassing the destruction attributed to the pirates they pursue. This pattern of excessive force and disregard for infrastructure costs results in their eventual dismissal from the DSP due to repeated complaints and incurred financial liabilities.
Following termination, Apulo commandeers their AI-equipped frigate, Lagendra, setting course for Titan to pursue a film career. Despite lacking official authority, Latell accompanies him, driven by a sense of responsibility to monitor Apulo and curb further chaos. During a critical mission on Mars involving the prohibited Computer Assisted Thinking System #86—a system designed to transform humans into cats—Latell faces potential transformation. Apulo intervenes using his emotion-locking power, halting the transformation process for Latell and their teammate Marsha. This intervention, however, inadvertently triggers the permanent feline transformation of Mars' inhabitants.
Latell maintains a strained working relationship with Apulo, marked by persistent arguments stemming from their opposing personalities. He functions as the rule-oriented, serious counterpoint to Apulo's hyperactive, irresponsible, and snack-obsessed nature. Within the DSP, Latell harbors romantic interest in his colleague Marsha, though his advances remain unreciprocated. His dynamic with departmental leadership, particularly Chief Buster, remains contentious due to the recurring operational damages, yet assignments continue despite mutual frustration.
