Alan Marriott
Description
Alan Marriott is a Canadian voice actor, dialect coach, and improvisational performer with a career spanning several decades. Born on July 19, 1971, he began his training in North Vancouver at the Studio 58 acting school before moving to London, England, to complete his formal education at The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA). His early fascination with dialects and character voices was inspired by watching Looney Tunes cartoons as a child, a passion that later defined his professional path.
Marriott's voice acting career includes a substantial body of work in anime dubs produced during the 1990s, a period when many English-language adaptations of Japanese animation were being created for international audiences. Among his notable anime roles are those specified by the user. In the Mad Bull 34 original video animation, he voiced the character Daizaburo "Eddie" Ban, a fresh-faced rookie police officer partnered with a more experienced and brutal detective in a crime-ridden New York City precinct. For Violence Jack, he provided the voice for the character Blue in the Evil Town installment. He also voiced Ryohei Yamazaki in the 1987 OVA Junk Boy, a comedy about a young man who lands a job at an adult magazine.
Beyond these specific credits, Marriott's filmography in anime is extensive. He played the lead role of Akira Fudo, the titular demon-human hybrid, in the Devilman OVAs. He voiced Kamui Shirō in the film adaptation of X, and Charon Mautholos in the 1994 version of Appleseed. His other English dub credits include Tokyo Babylon, Patlabor 2: The Movie, and Urusei Yatsura for a BBC dub. Many of these dubs were produced by studios like Manga Entertainment and were recorded at World Wide Group sound facilities, where Marriott was a frequent talent.
In addition to his anime work, Marriott has had a prolific career voicing characters in Western animation and video games. He is widely recognized as the voice of Scoop, Spud, and numerous other characters in the North American version of Bob the Builder. He also provided the voice for Grand Sensei Dareth in the long-running series Lego Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu, Victor Volt in The Secret Show, and various characters on children's programs like Dinosaur Train and Mama Mirabelle's Home Movies. His video game credits include the narrators in the PlayStation classics Jumping Flash! and Jumping Flash! 2, as well as Deetz Hartman in Dead Rising 2.
Marriott's expertise extends beyond performance into coaching and direction. He works as a voice director, having helmed six films for the BKN Classic Series trilogy. He is also an in-demand dialect coach for film and television and teaches voice acting at institutions such as LAMDA and Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in London. A lifelong improvisational theatre practitioner, he has performed with numerous troupes in both Canada and the UK, and is the author of a book on creative thinking titled Genius Now!. After spending twenty years living in London, he relocated back to Vancouver in 2008, but returned to the United Kingdom in 2017 where he continues to reside and work.
