Description
Chibi is a supporting character in Urusei Yatsura, known for being the shortest member of his class, which is the basis for his nickname meaning "tiny" or "little one" in Japanese. He has light brown hair, slanted beady eyes, and is sometimes depicted with buck teeth. A member of Lum's Stormtroopers, the devoted fan club for the alien princess Lum, Chibi serves as the group's errand boy and is often the unwilling victim of their bullying.
Originally part of a friend group with Ataru Moroboshi, Megane, Perm, and Kakugari since kindergarten, Chibi and the others became smitten with Lum after her arrival on Earth. Their affection for Lum turned to jealousy toward Ataru, leading them to form the Stormtroopers in a hopeless quest to break up Ataru and Lum so that one of them might have a chance with her.
Chibi's personality is defined by his timidity and meekness. He speaks with a cracked, nervous voice and is highly gullible, which makes him easily manipulated by the other Stormtroopers. He rarely resists their orders, even when those orders involve dangerous or humiliating tasks. Among the group, he is the weakest member and is frequently used as a punching bag, with Kakugari being the one who most often bullies him. Despite this mistreatment, Chibi remains closest to the group's leader, Megane, acting as his most faithful lackey. He accompanies Megane to part-time jobs to earn money for the group's funds and follows his philosophical schemes, even if he does not fully understand them.
Like his fellow Stormtroopers, Chibi is madly in love with Lum, but his cowardly and shy nature prevents him from actively pursuing her for himself. Instead, his primary motivation is to help Megane succeed in winning Lum's heart, though he will occasionally make timid attempts on his own behalf if an opportunity presents itself. Because the group rarely has success finding girlfriends, Chibi is sometimes forced to cross-dress as part of their plans, either to accompany them to social events so they appear less lonely or to act as a decoy.
Chibi does not possess any notable special abilities or combat skills. His role in the story is primarily comic relief, serving as a low-status character whose misfortunes highlight the absurdity of the Stormtroopers' schemes. In later parts of the original anime, Chibi experiences a somewhat pleasant ending, finding himself surrounded by several female characters. In the 2022 remake of the series, his character design was altered so that his height is nearly the same as Megane's, and he is addressed by his real name, Akira.
