Ryōken starts life as a young man crushed by profound misfortune, harboring deep resentment toward temples and monks. His sole hope rests on his unborn child, but a devastating incident strips him of everything, plunging him into despair. During this darkness, he encounters the teachings of the holy priest Rennyo, revealing the answer to the fundamental question of why humans live—a truth originally articulated by Shinran. These teachings provide Ryōken with new meaning and purpose, leading him to renounce his animosity and become Rennyo's apprentice.

As Rennyo's disciple, Ryōken actively spreads the Jōdo Shinshū Buddhist teachings. The growing number of followers at Honnōdera attracts hostility from rival Buddhist sects, forcing Ryōken and Rennyo to flee Kyoto. They seek refuge in Yoshizaki, within the Hokuriku region's Fukui prefecture, establishing a new base for their religious activities.

In Yoshizaki, Ryōken supports Rennyo's efforts to construct the Yoshizaki Gobo temple, a symbol of hope and resilience. He engages with local villagers, samurai, and others, witnessing firsthand how Rennyo's message fosters community and offers spiritual solace amidst social upheaval and war. Ryōken's journey faces external threats, including military conflicts and internal dissent, testing his resolve and faith.

His character arc traces a transformative path from bitterness and loss to finding spiritual grounding through Rennyo's guidance. He evolves into a dedicated follower, confronting adversity while contributing to the mission of uniting people across class divisions under the banner of Jōdo Shinshū Buddhism.
