Description
Choichiro Hikari worked as an astronaut aboard the EGG3 space station before enlisting in the Earth Defense Army's Science Guard Party. A meteor shower breached the station during one mission, rupturing his spacesuit and draining his oxygen. Facing imminent death, he defended the crew by repelling a Goglan larva assaulting the station. Ultraman Joneus from Planet U40 observed this selfless act and selected Hikari as his human partner to confront Earth's emerging threats.
While returning to Earth to join the Science Guard Party, Hikari met Joneus manifested as a mysterious light. Joneus proposed a symbiotic merger to protect Earth—a fusion that spared Hikari's life. Initially dismissing the event as a dream, Hikari later confirmed the merger when Joneus guided him to activate the star-shaped Beam Flasher device, transforming into Ultraman Joneus during a Seagra monster attack.
Hikari grappled with his dual identity. Early in his Science Guard Party service, he resisted transforming during a Goglan assault to prove humanity’s independent strength. His hesitation allowed Goglan to destroy a gas tank, injuring teammate Marume and triggering massive devastation. Consumed by guilt, Hikari pursued Goglan alone, crashing his aircraft and sustaining mortal wounds. Near death, Joneus reaffirmed his choice, enabling their transformation to destroy the monster.
Fighting the Spirit Parasite Gerada, Hikari disregarded Joneus’ warnings about its power. Their victory drained their energy, causing physical disintegration against its evolved form, Janyur. Revived on Planet U40, Hikari learned of Joneus’ status as U40’s mightiest warrior and the Ultra People’s history. He connected Earth’s Spirit Parasites to the Badel Group, theorizing they stole U40’s "Ultra Mind" technology. During Badel’s assault on U40, Hikari piloted a fighter craft while Joneus recovered from incapacitation.
Hikari’s leadership within the Science Guard Party matured, though teammates like Marume grew suspicious of his absences during Ultraman’s appearances. Defying Earth Self-Defense Army orders during the Heller Empire’s invasion, the team aided U40’s resistance. Confronting Heller leader Mac Datar, Hikari exposed his identity as Joneus to rescue his teammates, cementing team trust and securing their joint victory.
He shared camaraderie with teammate Mutsumi Hoshikawa, who returned his lost Beam Flasher before he recognized its purpose. He also experienced fleeting romantic connections, including attention from an alien princess and Joneus’ sister, Amia.
After U40’s liberation, Joneus separated from Hikari to observe Earth with Amia. They departed, pledging to return if new threats arose, ending their symbiotic partnership.
