Description
Ultraman Joneus hails from Planet U40, an advanced civilization where inhabitants transform into Ultra warriors using the artificial Ultra Mind energy source. He stands as the strongest member of the Great Eight, an elite warrior group selected by U40's Great Sage to safeguard universal peace. The Star Symbol, a star-shaped Color Timer on his chest, tracks his energy levels, shifting from green to yellow and finally red as power depletes, typically imposing a four-minute operational limit on Earth. At full stature, Joneus measures between 70 to 120 meters tall and weighs 50,000 to 85,000 tons, capable of flight at Mach 8 and possessing forearm strength of 200,000 tons.
Before his Earth mission, Joneus observed Choichiro Hikari, a human worker on Space Satellite EGG3. Hikari's selfless act of defending the station against a Goglan creature under low-oxygen conditions, and his subsequent decision to keep this secret, solidified Joneus's choice to bond with him. This merger enabled Joneus to operate on Earth, battling monsters and alien invasions while Hikari maintained his secret identity within the Science Defense Squad. Their partnership ended when both were killed by the Spirit Parasite Bedorun, only to be resurrected on U40. During this time, Hikari learned of U40's ancient connection to Earth, including its role in establishing early human civilization alongside Neanderthals. Following the repulsion of the Badel Group's invasion of U40, Hikari's memories were erased to protect U40's secrecy.
Joneus later confronted the Heller Empire, a renegade faction of U40 Ultras led by the banished Heller. When Heller invaded U40 and Earth, Joneus joined the U40 resistance and the Science Defense Squad in a counterattack. During the assault on Heller City, he separated from Hikari to engage Heller's fleet, but remerged with his host to save the squad from execution. After Heller's defeat, Joneus remained on Earth with his sister Amia to observe reconstruction before departing, promising to return if needed.
In subsequent events, Joneus mentored Ultraman Titas following the death of Titas's friend Mattia. He also assisted during Zett's invasion of U40, advising Titas and Ultraman Taiga to retrieve the Wise Man’s Sword to seal Zett away. Joneus reappeared in conflicts against the Absolutian forces, notably clashing with Absolute Tartarus on U40. His combat skill forced Tartarus to retreat, acknowledging Joneus as a threat. Joneus subsequently trained Inter Galactic Defense Force members, including Ultraman Zero, emphasizing instinctual combat techniques.
His abilities include the Planium Beam, fired as energy balls or a concentrated stream; the Astro Beam projected from his forehead Astro Spot; and the Boomerang Guillotine. He also employs physical techniques like the Ultra Spinning Flash and Rocking Spark. Joneus made his live-action debut outside animation in the 1979 film *Ultraman: Great Monster Decisive Battle*, defeating Bedran.
