Description
Clarus Amicitia leads House Amicitia, the lineage sworn to protect the Lucian royals as the King's Shield. This middle-aged man possesses a shaved head, piercing blue eyes, and a prominent bird tattoo marking his earned role as Shield, distinct from a family crest and mirrored by his son Gladiolus. He consistently wears the black and gold uniform of the Lucian ruling council and wields a Crown City-crafted broadsword modified with an elemental energy-collecting tube.

His life centers around an unbreakable bond with King Regis Lucis Caelum, forged in childhood. Clarus views safeguarding Regis as his sole purpose, demonstrating absolute loyalty and readiness to sacrifice for king and kingdom. He understands the weight of Regis's decisions, harboring no resentment even when they impose personal or family burdens, believing their sons will ultimately comprehend the necessity, though he feels guilt over secrets kept from Gladiolus. Despite this dedication, Clarus holds prejudices against commoners and other races, opposing Regis's relationship with Italina Auditore and rejecting an illegitimate grandson as royal heir. As Crownsguard head, he prioritizes recruits based on status or royal connections, fostering rivalry with groups like the Hunters.

Clarus accompanied Regis on key missions, including a diplomatic journey to Accordo in M.E. 725 with allies Cid Sophiar and Cor Leonis. He later joined Regis in Tenebrae during Prince Noctis's recovery. Declining the Trial of Gilgamesh to remain at Regis's side, he warned Cor Leonis of its futility. Before the Niflheim peace treaty, Clarus managed intense Crownsguard security operations, sleeping at the Citadel. He instructed Gladiolus to protect Noctis as both heir and friend, noting the Crownsguard's shift toward public protection to bolster support for Regis.

During the treaty signing, Clarus supported Regis's acceptance of Niflheim's terms. When betrayed, he fought alongside Regis against General Glauca in Insomnia, dying while defending the king. With his final breaths, he entrusted Cor Leonis to guide Gladiolus as the next King's Shield, expressing confidence in his son. Cor later conveyed Clarus's pride to Gladiolus, cementing his legacy.

In expanded media, Clarus appears as an assist character in "A King's Tale," aiding Regis with spinning attacks or heavy blows and saluting after actions. His likeness is modeled after actor Gil Darnell, with motion capture by Liam Mulvey. His name, derived from Latin meaning "clear," "renowned," or "respected," follows Eosian noble conventions.
