Description
Neil Nordegraf, known as "Young Neil," is Scott Pilgrim and Stephen Stills' close associate. He first appears as Sex Bob-omb's substitute member and devoted supporter, living with Stephen Stills and inhabiting Scott's social periphery. Often seen quietly observing band practices or hangouts while playing video games, his nickname stems from being younger than other band members. He later insists on being called simply "Neil," considering this formal recognition a major personal step.

His background includes a brief romance with Knives Chau, sparked when he comforted her after an Envy Adams incident. This pairing was fueled by Knives' wish to recreate her relationship with Scott, as Neil resembled Scott physically and shared his interests in video games and band shirts. Stephen Stills disapproved, even threatening Neil. The relationship ended due to incompatibility, triggering Neil's emotional withdrawal and increased hostility towards friends. He adopted smoking, displayed cynicism, and hurled homophobic insults at Stephen.

Neil's personality is initially passive and observant, often overshadowed by louder peers. Yet underlying sensitivity surfaces, like distress when his commitment to Sex Bob-omb is doubted. After his Knives breakup and feeling abandoned, he turns noticeably bitter and immature. This includes self-isolation during band recordings and lashing out. Despite this, he shows growth by series end, reconciling with friends and dropping the "Young" prefix, though some cynicism lingers.

In the anime adaptation, Neil's role expands significantly. He adopts a more overtly airheaded, scatterbrained persona. Diverging from previous narratives, he never joins Sex Bob-omb as bassist or pursues Knives. Instead, he passionately pursues filmmaking, convinced he authored a speculative movie about Scott Pilgrim's life under altered circumstances, marking a distinct character reimagining.

His relationships remain complex. While loyal to Scott, he sometimes gives misguided advice, like urging Scott to preemptively attack Envy Adams – a plan failing catastrophically. Tensions with Stephen Stills over their shared living space persist unresolved. Neil's attire frequently echoes Scott's, featuring band or video game T-shirts, including one depicting blank comic panels symbolizing his ongoing story.
