Description
Tatsuma Sakamoto, born to Tosa Province’s merchant elite, signed on as a wartime supplier during the Joui War’s twilight, funding and equipping samurai rebels despite his pacifist leanings. He fought alongside Sakata Gintoki, Katsura Kotarou, and Takasugi Shinsuke until a defining act of mercy—attempting to rescue a wounded enemy soldier—shattered his right arm, ending his swordsmanship and frontline service. This retreat prompted a soul-searching transition from combatant to peacemaker.

Post-recovery, he reunited with Gintoki but discovered Katsura and Takasugi missing. Spurred by Gintoki’s support, he envisioned interstellar commerce as a bridge between humans and Amanto. His maiden trade endeavor collapsed, stranding him at sea until capture by Chidori pirates. Imprisoned, he rallied enslaved comrades and caught the eye of vice-captain Mutsu. When her crew turned against her, he engineered a mutiny, liberated the captives, and transformed the fleet into Kaientai, his interstellar trade consortium, with Mutsu as his steadfast lieutenant.

Leading Kaientai, Sakamoto prioritized dialogue over violence, though his naivete once entangled him in Dark Vader’s Earth conquest scheme. Yet his diplomatic prowess proved pivotal in swaying the Renho tribe to overthrow their oppressive leader. His occasionally dubious business tactics sought shared profit over strife, embodying his conviction that trade, not war, could forge lasting peace.

Personality-wise, Sakamoto maintains a facade of cheerful obliviousness, defusing tension with boisterous laughter that conceals wartime scars and sharp strategic insight. His optimism, a shield against grief for fallen comrades, fuels loyalty to friends—seen in mediating Gintoki and Takasugi’s clashes and gifting Katsura the eccentric Elizabeth.

Physically, he’s distinguished by curly brown hair, circular sunglasses, and a scarred right hand. Initially clad in samurai armor and kabuto, he later sported a crimson coat and geta sans tabi. A post-timeskip stubble marked a brief departure from his trademark look before he reverted to clean-shaven familiarity.

His arc spans media: the *Shiroyasha Kōtan* OVA reveals his Joui War contributions, while Kaientai and Rakuyo arcs chronicle his evolution from sidelined warrior to Earth’s unorthodox protector, leveraging commerce and unity as weapons against conflict. These narratives frame his legacy as a strategist who redefined strength through trust and collective gain.
