Description
Fuutarou Uesugi is the main protagonist of the story, a high school student whose life is defined by academic excellence and financial hardship. He lives with his father, Isanari Uesugi, and his younger sister, Raiha Uesugi, in a small apartment after the death of his mother when he was six years old. The family carries significant debt, forcing Fuutarou to adopt a very frugal lifestyle, and his primary motivation for accepting a tutoring position is the high pay offered, which is five times the market rate.

Physically, Fuutarou is tall, standing at 178 centimeters, with a slim build and fair skin. He has short, dark hair styled in a bowl cut with two distinctive strands sticking up from the back, a haircut he explains was done by his sister Raiha. His expression is typically serious and stern, often giving others the impression that he is unfriendly or even intimidating. His eye color varies across adaptations, appearing blue in the first anime season and amber in the second, closer to his manga design. In his childhood, he looked quite different, sporting spiky blonde hair and an earring, resembling the delinquent his father said he used to be before he devoted himself to studying.

His personality is marked by bluntness, brutal honesty, and a conceited nature that often puts him at odds with others, especially the Nakano sisters when he first meets them. He views high school romance as a silly distraction that would only hinder his academic and career goals, and he initially has no interest in forming personal relationships, preferring solitude. Despite his egotistical and tactless exterior, Fuutarou possesses a great deal of patience and a strong sense of duty. He is deeply loyal and caring, particularly towards his sister Raiha, whom he is very protective of, and he gradually extends this care to the quintuplets he is hired to tutor. He is also noted to be very bad at sports and has low physical stamina, which is often played as a contrast to his intellectual prowess.

Fuutarou's core motivation is rooted in a childhood experience. During a school trip to Kyoto in sixth grade, he met a girl who inspired him to change his wild ways and dedicate himself to studying. He keeps a photo of this girl in his student handbook, as she was his inspiration to become someone who could be "needed" by others, especially to help support his sister and family. This mentality made him believe that relationships were a disgrace for a student, as they would divert attention from building a career.

His role in the story begins when he is hired to tutor the five Nakano quintuplets: Ichika, Nino, Miku, Yotsuba, and Itsuki. They are his classmates who are all on the verge of flunking out of school. Initially, the sisters want nothing to do with a tutor, and his abrasive personality only makes things worse. However, after demonstrating his sincerity and dedication to their success, he slowly wins their trust, though Nino remains hostile for a significant period. His relationship with each sister evolves uniquely: Yotsuba is the first to accept him and becomes a consistent supporter; Miku develops feelings for him after seeing his earnest nature; Ichika is initially lazy but comes to respect him; Nino eventually transforms from his biggest detractor to being openly affectionate; and Itsuki has a contentious but ultimately trusting relationship with him, often centered on their shared academic goals.

Throughout the series, Fuutarou undergoes significant character development. He begins as a friendless, socially inept loner with only his father and sister in his phone contacts, believing that human connections are troublesome. However, through his continuous interactions with the quintuplets, he begins to open up his heart. He gains his first male friends, Maeda and Yusuke Takeda, and becomes more perceptive of other people's emotions. Despite initially claiming love is beneath him, he is forced to confront this belief when several of the sisters confess their feelings. He struggles to understand the weight of these confessions and ultimately comes to realize that meeting the five girls allowed him to move on from his status quo, culminating in him being able to fall in love.

Fuutarou's most notable ability is his exceptional academic intelligence. He is the top student in his grade, famously earning perfect scores on every test, and has an extraordinary memory and reading comprehension, able to absorb dozens of books in just a few days. He is also very observant, able to quickly notice when others are struggling and is often able to see through a person's emotions and motivate them. He eventually develops the crucial skill of being able to tell the identical Nakano quintuplets apart based on subtle cues in their behavior and mannerisms. In contrast, his notable weaknesses include a complete lack of athletic ability, low physical strength, poor social skills, and an inability to cook.
