Description
Hwaryun is a character from the anime Tower of God, known for her striking appearance and her role as a Guide. She has bright red hair and red eyes and is often seen wearing a hooded pink sweatshirt, a black skirt, and red leggings. One of her most recognizable features is the eyepatch she wears over her right eye. She originally possessed both eyes but lost her right eye during an incident on the Second Floor when the protagonist, Baam, inadvertently used shinsu to protect his companion Rachel, and the resulting attack struck Hwaryun. Prior to this injury, she had concealed her face with a jeweled mask.

Hwaryun is a member of a unique species known as the Red Witch, which grants her innate guiding abilities. In the context of the Tower, Guides possess the rare and powerful ability to see and show others the best path to take, whether in a literal maze or in a broader, metaphorical sense regarding their journey and decisions. This ability allows her to navigate the Tower's floors and tests with an almost precognitive understanding of the outcomes of different choices. She is affiliated with FUG, a powerful and shadowy organization that opposes the current rulers of the Tower. While her official status as a Regular is questionable, her role as a Guide often grants her exemptions from standard procedures, allowing her to move freely throughout the Tower to accomplish her objectives.

In terms of personality, Hwaryun is characterized as being quiet, calm, and manipulative, with a gloomy and sometimes mischievous demeanor. She is a master strategist who works behind the scenes to orchestrate events according to FUG's plans and is skilled at deceiving and manipulating others to achieve specific goals. For instance, she was able to trick Khun Aguero Agnis as part of a larger scheme on the Second Floor. Her dialogue is often cynical and pragmatic, dismissing naive notions of sympathy or justice in favor of cold, hard strategies necessary for survival and success. She can be teasing and arrogant, often wearing a smile of mischief, which other characters sometimes find creepy or unnerving.

Hwaryun's primary motivation and role in the story are deeply tied to FUG and its ultimate goal of using Baam to change the Tower. She serves as a dedicated Guide for Baam, who is known within FUG by his slayer candidate name, Jyu Viole Grace. She firmly believes in his destiny as an Irregular, a being not chosen by the Tower who entered from the outside, believing he possesses the potential to overthrow the current King, Zahard. She frequently refers to Baam as my god, a title that reflects her devotion to his cause and his importance to FUG. Her counsel is intended to push him toward gaining the strength he needs, warning him of the calamities and powerful enemies that await him, such as Zahard's army, which she compares to shrimps against a giant shark when contrasted with Baam's latent potential.

Throughout the story, Hwaryun develops from a mysterious and seemingly antagonistic figure to a crucial ally for Baam and his close friends, including Khun and Rak. While her methods remain morally ambiguous, her loyalty to Baam becomes more evident as she repeatedly helps him and his team survive impossible situations. She played a pivotal role during the Workshop Battle, where she helped Baam acquire the Thorn, a powerful and legendary weapon, by manipulating both her allies and enemies within FUG. She later guides the group to the Hell Express, a dangerous train that travels between the upper floors of the Tower, and continues to advise them on the perilous journey ahead. Her advice can be harsh, such as when she suggests the team separate so they can grow stronger without relying on Baam's power, demonstrating her commitment to their long-term survival over their short-term comfort.

Though her primary function is as a Guide who shows the path, Hwaryun is also capable in combat, using shinsu to enhance her physical abilities and wielding a golden staff that can attack opponents. Her fighting skills are considered low compared to top-tier Rankers, but she is far from defenseless. Her true strength lies in her knowledge of the Tower, her ability to see the future paths of those around her, and her cunning intellect, which makes her one of the most influential and dangerous players in the struggle for the Tower's future.
