Born in 1981 at Sōgō Hospital in modern Tokyo, Kagome Higurashi received her name from the Shikon Jewel's sparkling light observed at her birth. Her father died in a car accident when she was four, leaving her mother pregnant with her younger brother, Sōta. The family then relocated to live at the Higurashi Shrine with her grandfather. Unbeknownst to Kagome, the Shikon Jewel had been reincarnated within her since birth.
On her fifteenth birthday in 1996, the demon Mistress Centipede pulled her into the Bone-Eater's Well on the shrine grounds, transporting her 500 years into Japan's Sengoku past. There, she encountered the half-demon Inuyasha, sealed to a sacred tree by priestess Kikyō's arrow fifty years earlier. After Mistress Centipede attacked Kagome and extracted the Shikon Jewel, Kagome freed Inuyasha for help. Though he defeated the demon, a corpse-crow demon stole the Jewel. Kagome attempted to shoot it down but accidentally shattered the Jewel into countless shards scattered across feudal Japan. Kaede, Kikyō's younger sister, identified Kagome as Kikyō's reincarnation due to their identical appearance and spiritual aura, though Kagome retained no past-life memories.
Kagome stayed in the feudal era to help Inuyasha recover the Jewel shards, forming a group with the fox-demon Shippō, the monk Miroku, the demon-slayer Sango, and Sango's two-tailed cat companion Kirara. She balanced this quest with her modern life as a middle-school student, frequently traveling through the well between eras, her grandfather often fabricating illnesses to excuse her school absences. Kagome possessed innate spiritual powers inherited from Kikyō, including purification abilities and enhanced archery skills, which she honed under Kaede's guidance. A subjugation necklace placed on Inuyasha allowed Kagome to control him with the command "Sit!" when needed, though its use diminished as their trust deepened.
Kagome developed romantic feelings for Inuyasha, creating tension due to his unresolved attachment to Kikyō. This complexity intensified after encounters with Kikyō's rival, the dark priestess Tsubaki, who exploited Kagome's connection to Kikyō using a cursed shard to manipulate her into trying to kill Inuyasha. Kagome overcame this through her own spiritual strength and Kikyō's assistance. Further conflict arose from Kōga, leader of the wolf-demon tribe, who pursued Kagome romantically, calling her "my woman" despite her consistent rejections, which often provoked clashes with Inuyasha.
Kagome played a pivotal role in the final battle against Naraku, the half-demon who corrupted Kikyō and Inuyasha's original relationship. After Naraku's defeat, Kagome used a final wish to obliterate the Shikon Jewel permanently. This act sealed the Bone-Eater's Well, separating her from the feudal era for three years, during which she completed high school in modern Tokyo. The well later reopened, allowing her permanent return to the past. She married Inuyasha and trained under Kaede to become a full-fledged priestess, adapting to feudal-era life. The couple had a daughter named Moroha, though Kagome and Inuyasha were later sealed away for fourteen years during events chronicled in the sequel series *Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon*.
