Description
Rui Komada steps into the presidency of her family's distillery after her father's death from overwork and her elder brother's departure to a rival company. Previously uninvolved in the distillery, she had pursued art studies away from home. Her return marks a critical effort to save the family business from imminent closure.
The Komada distillery suffered severe damage in the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, which destroyed the original casks containing their signature Koma whisky blend, halting its production entirely. Rui's primary objective is to recreate this lost whisky despite financial constraints, missing production clues, and the absence of the original recipe. Through dedicated effort, she mastered the whisky business and developed a new blend using surviving casks. This successful blend prevented the distillery's collapse and stabilized operations.
Rui demonstrates significant determination in pursuing the Koma revival, investing both company finances and her personal memories of the distillery's past success. She maintains a positive outlook despite substantial pressures. Her leadership inspires strong employee loyalty, with staff staying despite opportunities for higher compensation elsewhere.
Her professional path intersects with Kotaro Takahashi, a novice journalist initially unfamiliar with whisky production. Early interactions reveal tension, particularly when Kotaro displays ignorance about industry terminology and undervalues Rui's expertise. However, their collaborative work on whisky-related articles gradually fosters mutual understanding. Kotaro eventually assists Rui in overcoming business challenges and facilitates reconciliation within her fractured family.
Rui exhibits a distinctive approach to recording whisky tasting notes, a method notable enough to generate audience amusement during its reveal. Her character arc reflects themes of perseverance, preserving family legacy, and balancing present sacrifices against future aspirations. The narrative frames whisky production as a metaphor for this long-term perspective, emphasizing patience and dedication across generations.
