Description
Hifumi Izanami, known professionally as GIGOLO, is Shinjuku's top host. He suffers from an extreme phobia of women due to severe high school trauma. His childhood friend, Honobono Keitoin, once part of his close group with Doppo Kannonzaka, manipulated his family by seducing his father and sister's fiancé, causing his mother and sister to abandon him. Honobono then fabricated evidence to frame him for attacking her, turning the school against him except for Doppo. This trauma included implied sexual assault by Honobono, directly causing his debilitating fear.

After high school, Hifumi struggled to hold jobs requiring interaction with women. Doppo provided financial and emotional support, eventually securing him an inventory position at age 22. During a company outing orchestrated by their abusive manager Yamadori, Hifumi was deliberately exposed to hostesses, triggering a panic attack. Doppo intervened violently, quitting his job to get Hifumi to safety.

In response, Hifumi developed a psychological coping mechanism called "host mode." Wearing a specific suit jacket induces an auto-suggestive state allowing him to interact with women while suppressing his phobia. This persona is princely, flamboyant, and semi-formal. Without the jacket, his off-duty personality is bubbly, frivolous, informal, and slang-heavy. Securing a job at Kabukicho's host club Fragrance let him use this persona professionally. He later invited Doppo to become his roommate; they share an apartment where Hifumi handles all chores and cooking.

His trauma resurfaced when an obsessive client stalked him, sending threatening letters, photos, and a bloody knife before breaking in and stabbing him. This led Jakurai Jinguji to assist, resulting in Hifumi and Doppo joining Jakurai to form the rap group Matenro. As Matenro, Hifumi participates in Division Rap Battles using his rap ability "Enchant" to mesmerize opponents and gain control. During the 1st Division Rap Battle, his impulsive host-mode behavior inadvertently initiated a battle against Fling Posse; Matenro became champions.

Hifumi actively works to overcome his trauma, demonstrated when Matenro helped Asunaro Bojo rescue her kidnapped brother. He later confronted Honobono directly during Matenro's clash with Bad Ass Temple. This triggered an intense panic attack when Honobono invaded his space, causing a paralytic breakdown with pronoun switching and screaming. His use of "Hi-Fu-Mi" in raps reclaims his identity from Honobono, who used to say his name that way.

Outside work, Hifumi enjoys outdoor activities like fishing and camping, often with Jakurai and occasionally Doppo. His foundational relationship with Doppo involves mutual dependence and deep loyalty. Their bond is sometimes interpreted as romantic due to shared experiences, emotional intimacy, love duets, and descriptions of a unique connection. Hifumi's phobia precludes relationships with women, leading to speculation about his sexuality.
