Description
Nio Chirinu, a Kyoto orphan raised by his adoptive grandmother in her restaurant, initially works there with his sister Iroha. His life shifts dramatically upon encountering Toshizou Hijikata and Souji Okita of the Miburo group. When child abductors strike, Hijikata and Okita use Nio and Iroha as bait, resulting in their rescue and the criminals' arrest. This harsh introduction to the world and the Miburo's methods sparks a change within Nio. Recognizing his potential and desire to protect others, Hijikata extends an invitation to join the Miburo. Frustrated by his perceived weakness and driven by a fierce sense of justice, Nio accepts, determined to gain the strength needed to change the world for the better and safeguard Kyoto's people.

Physically, Nio is short with striking sky-blue eyes and long, smooth silver hair ending just above his shoulders. As a Miburo samurai, he wears a traditional dark blue kimono featuring distinctive white zigzag patterns on the inner wide sleeves and two woven white cords crossed in an X over his chest. He carries a katana with a dark red and gold hilt and traditional Japanese geta sandals.

Kind, honest, and deeply devoted to his family, Nio possesses a profound and fervent sense of justice. He dreams of creating a better world but grapples with the moral complexities and violence of the Bakumatsu era. After joining the Miburo, he dedicates himself to rigorous swordsmanship training, striving to match his comrades' skill. He actively works to befriend fellow young members Tarou Tanaka and Hajime Saitou, who initially resist his presence. His journey involves confronting the dissonance between his idealistic vision of peace and the violent necessities of his role. Recognized as a significant figure, he is sometimes called one of the three wolves of Mibu. Nio's development centers on forging his own path to justice amidst betrayal, political turmoil, and warfare, forcing him to reconcile his innate compassion with his duty.

In combat, Nio develops into an expert swordsman wielding his katana with significant proficiency. He also possesses notably enhanced reflexes, allowing exceptional speed in reacting to threats, dodging complex attacks, and intercepting projectiles, skills honed through Miburo training and experience.

His narrative follows ongoing development within the Miburo, later the Shinsengumi, continuing into the "Shinsengumi Arc," exploring his further role and challenges during this historical transition.
