Description
Zanzō Raidō, known as "The Demon Eater," is a human samurai who hunts dark spirits called "Yami" and sells their meat. His potent spiritual heritage enhances his effectiveness in this profession. Raidō wields the Demon Sword Arabuki, a weapon that manipulates wind. His true combat strength, however, lies in masterful swordsmanship rather than magical artifacts, allowing him to overwhelm opponents like Jinka Yamato even with ordinary blades after Arabuki fails.
Initially appearing as a ronin hired by the Dangaishu organization to eliminate demons, Raidō operates with practicality and self-reliance. He engages in two significant battles against Jinka Yamato, winning the first duel but losing the rematch. Following this defeat, he temporarily joins Jinka's group, receiving food in exchange for swordsmanship instruction. During this time, he mentors Shinsuke Hyoudou, teaching advanced techniques like a powerful horizontal slash. Their relationship deepens, culminating years later in Kyoto when Raidō formally gifts Arabuki to Shinsuke, acknowledging him as its rightful owner.
Demonstrating loyalty and duty, Raidō undertakes an independent mission to protect Ashikaga Yoshiteru from a familial curse, leaving Arabuki with Shinsuke for the task. Later, during the relocation of royal residents to a village outside Kyoto, Raidō and Shinsuke become bound to the settlement by the local deity Hanatora. Confined there for eight years, Raidō settles into a quieter life, marrying a former maid and starting a family. This period reveals a more content and laid-back side as he ages.
In his later years, Raidō serves as a respected village elder and leader alongside the Kazamatsuri family (Shinsuke's lineage). He laughs heartily upon learning of Hisahide Matsunaga's downfall—the man responsible for Ashikaga Yoshiteru's defeat—resulting in such intense back pain he cannot rise from the floor, highlighting his human vulnerabilities in old age. His legacy endures through his family's continued village leadership role.
Raidō's abilities center on masterful swordsmanship, superhuman physical attributes (strength, speed, durability), and spiritual energy. His primary technique with Arabuki, "Violent Wind," unleashes torrents of wind. Despite aging, he remains perceptive and engaged with events affecting those he once protected.
