Description
Akira Ihotsu hails from a future Earth controlled by the Pan-Star System Trade Federation after the "Great Collapse," a third-world planet exporting mercenaries and food. Denied college entrance exams due to alleged corruption favoring others, a physical confrontation stemming from his teacher's harsh assessment of his future led to expulsion. Following menial work and another arrest after fighting coworkers, military recruiter Vasha Pupkin secured his release.

His upbringing in this oppressive, resource-scarce environment forged significant distrust, anger, and a self-centered outlook. Betrayal and competition for scarce opportunities cemented his belief that survival demands prioritizing self-interest over cooperation or trust. Recruited into the experimental K321 Yakitori unit—an orbital drop infantry force with a 70% casualty rate—he initially resisted bonding with multinational teammates Zihan Yang, Tyron Baxter, Erland Martonen, and Amalia Schulz. He declared indifference to their fates, preferred operating alone during early Mars training, and clashed verbally and physically with teammates and instructors.

Akira's defining combat trait was an intense focus on personal survival, sometimes overriding broader ethics. On their first mission on Barka, he advocated for and coordinated orbital bombardment against enemy artillery, causing catastrophic casualties among the planet's native rodent-like inhabitants. Unlike his shocked or remorseful teammates, he showed open satisfaction and relief at eliminating the threat, displaying no apparent guilt over the genocide.

Despite ingrained individualism, prolonged combat and training under authoritarian instructor John Doe prompted gradual shifts. He accepted teamwork's necessity for survival, later acting as a decoy during a Spider Tank engagement so his unit could destroy it. This evolution towards cooperation enhanced K321's effectiveness, earning recognition from Federation marines. Arrested and subjected to a show trial for the Barka bombardment, the unit's legal classification as expendable "equipment" resulted in acquittal. They were reassigned to a hostage rescue mission on Barka, confirming Akira's continued role within the Federation military.
