He shelters Koushi and his ill sister Hinako following their mother's death, exchanging medical care for Hinako with access to Koushi's scientific skills. Deeply distrusting the ruling Divine Clans, whom he suspects caused a catastrophic capital fire to cull the population, Yuoshichi believes volatile skyfire energy weapons are vital for survival amid the government's impending collapse. He tasks Koushi with developing these enhanced weapons. To accelerate conflict between the gods and the rebel Spiders, Yuoshichi manipulates political tensions by directing his associate Roroku to plant skyfire explosives near the Divine Palace. He views Koushi as a strategic asset, pushing him to modify an ancient Lightning Cannon into a ground-based defense against the anticipated Spider assault. Despite Hibana's aversion to animals, Yuoshichi allows the fire hunter dog Kanata to stay after Hinako bonds with it. Yuoshichi shares an undisclosed past connection with Koushi's father, Haijuu.
