Description
Jōgorō Kobato is a first-year student at Funado High School. He maintains friendships with Yuki Osanai, whom he met in middle school, and Kengo Doujima, a childhood friend from elementary school.

His background includes a difficult past engagement in deduction activities known as "wisdom work," which fostered a deep personal desire for a quiet, peaceful, and ordinary life. This longing shapes his primary motivation. He established a formal "reciprocal relationship" with Yuki Osanai in middle school, as she shared the same goal of becoming ordinary. Their agreement centers on mutual support to achieve an uneventful high school experience.

His family owns a Japanese confectionery shop, and growing up in this environment has given him a distinct dislike for sweets.

Despite actively seeking ordinariness, he possesses exceptional deductive and analytical abilities. He employs a reflective method, often inserting himself into the situations of others, particularly perpetrators, to understand and solve mysteries. He consciously downplays these skills to maintain a low profile. His morality is high, and he frequently chooses to move on from frustrating or immoral events rather than seek confrontation, such as when he suggests to Yuki Osanai that they pretend a theft incident never occurred.

His relationship with Yuki Osanai is complex. Though they are partners in pursuing ordinariness, her cozy demeanor with him has been an act since middle school, and he was unaware of being manipulated throughout their interactions.

In contrast, his relationship with Kengo Doujima is straightforward. Although Doujima is initially intrusive and somewhat antagonistic, Kobato understands him to be a fundamentally friendly and reliable individual who is uncomfortable with Kobato's ordinary aspirations yet still relies on his skills. As a member of the newspaper club, Doujima often involves Kobato in investigating minor school mysteries, which frequently disrupts Kobato's plans for a peaceful day.
