Description
Jōgorō Kobato is the male protagonist of the series and a high school student who possesses a remarkably sharp and deductive mind. His most defining characteristic is his powerful urge to solve mysteries, a compulsion he personally refers to as his fox side. This inner drive constantly pulls him toward puzzles and unexplained events, creating a central conflict within himself.
Kobato's background is shaped by a painful experience during his middle school years, when he actively embraced the role of a great detective. He would eagerly solve problems and incidents around him, initially enjoying the recognition and attention it brought. However, this behavior eventually led to resentment and hostility from others, culminating in a deeply scarring incident where he received an anonymous note telling him to come alone. This trauma convinced him that standing out because of his wisdom work only brings trouble and isolation.
As a result, Kobato enters high school with a powerful new motivation: to become an ordinary citizen, or shoshimin, and live a quiet, peaceful, and uneventful life. He tries to suppress his detective instincts and blend into the background, cultivating a polite and somewhat indifferent demeanor to avoid attracting attention. While clever and occasionally cynical, he makes a conscious effort to act neutrally and forgets people's names with notable frequency, a habit that helps him maintain distance from social entanglements. His appearance is described as gentle and handsome, which aids his goal of not standing out.
Despite his best efforts, Kobato finds it nearly impossible to resist a mystery when one presents itself. His sharp observational skills and logical reasoning frequently lead him to uncover the truth behind the everyday incidents that plague his school life. One of his notable deduction methods involves loosening his focus when he feels close to an answer, stepping back to view the problem from an external perspective to find the solution. When he identifies the key piece of a puzzle, he is known to declare his insight with a characteristic phrase.
His most significant relationship is with his classmate, Yuki Osanai. Recognizing their shared desire for an ordinary life and understanding each other's true, potentially troublesome natures, they form a mutually beneficial or reciprocal relationship starting in the summer of their third year of middle school. This pact is built on supporting each other's goal of peaceful existence, even as their respective personalities frequently draw them into chaotic situations.
Kobato comes from a family that owns a traditional Japanese sweets shop, which has ironically left him somewhat tired of Japanese confections. He does, however, develop a genuine fondness for Western sweets, particularly the Charlotte cake from a shop called Jeff Beck, which he enjoys during his second year of high school.
