Description
Yuta Asuka, known as Yu, is a student at Shijo Minami Middle School who acts as manager for the boys' soft tennis club. They stand 5'4" with short, ashy brown hair and coffee-colored eyes. Yuta possesses a kind, mild-mannered, and pacifistic nature, enduring bullying without retaliation. Introverted and reserved, they struggle to express feelings or ideas and prefer not to involve others in their problems. Despite this, they are highly observant, providing detailed analyses of opponents' playstyles that greatly benefit the club.
They live with their mother and two older sisters. Their mother expressed anger upon discovering Yuta borrowing clothes from their sisters, insisting they should never dress as a girl. In contrast, their sisters are supportive and accepting of Yuta's gender nonconformity, lending clothes and using their preferred name.
Yuta experiences uncertainty regarding gender identity, feeling that "non-binary" might be the closest label but also expressing discomfort with categorization. They prefer the name Yu, which feels right, and are unsure about continuing to live as a boy but also do not currently wish to be a girl. They lack self-confidence in this aspect of their identity.
They have known Toma Shinjo since elementary school, and Toma often protects them from bullies. Yuta developed a crush on Toma, which Maki Katsuragi noticed. Maki later asked Yuta to become club manager, noting their observational skills and kindness. Yuta accepts, handling schedules and equipment while providing valuable opponent analyses.
Yuta comes out as non-binary to Maki during a plan to scout opponents by cross-dressing, a skill learned from their sisters. Maki responds supportively, sharing his understanding through his mother's transgender friend and using Yuta's preferred nickname, Yu, which strengthens their friendship.
In an epilogue set two years later, Yuta accompanies friends Mitsue and Arashi to meet Maki at Rokugo Watergate, indicating their continued presence within the social group.
