Description
Etsuko Murakami attends Mitsu Higashi High School in Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture, home to an annual inter-class rowing competition. During her sophomore year race, she abruptly stops rowing mid-event, convinced her team faces inevitable defeat – an action reflecting her broader view that effort is futile. This mindset permeates her high school life, defined by a lack of clear goals or purpose, where she drifts through days without direction.

Her trajectory shifts when transfer student Riina Takahashi, having witnessed the rowing competition, approaches Etsuko with a proposal to revive the school's women's rowing club. Though initially reluctant, Etsuko agrees to join after hearing Riina's passionate vision, motivated primarily by the need to boost membership numbers rather than genuine interest. Alongside childhood friend Hime Saeki and classmates Taeko Hyodo and Mayumi Imoto, Etsuko becomes part of the newly formed team.

Guided by the club's sole male member, Hayato Ninomiya, and their novice advisor, the team begins training. Early struggles surface during their first competition when their boat veers off course, resulting in last place. This defeat ignites a competitive drive within the group. Through persistent practice and shared experiences with her teammates, Etsuko gradually develops a deeper commitment to rowing. The frustrations and hard-won successes of training and racing build strong camaraderie and reshape her outlook.

Etsuko evolves from apathy to active engagement. She moves from quitting mid-race to embracing the shared oar strokes and collective spirit of her team, discovering motivation through their joint struggles and aspirations. Her journey marks a clear transition from aimlessness to invested participation, fueled by the bonds forged within the rowing club.
