Meme Bashame is a first-year student at Hino Minami High School and a member of its Deer Club. Her past as a student at an unnamed middle school remains largely unknown. She is first introduced sulking on the school grounds, weakened by extreme hunger to the point of being unable to move and at risk of missing the orientation ceremony. Noko Shikanoko offers her a bundle of deer crackers in this state, an act of kindness that leaves a deep impression on Bashame. She spends the ceremony reminiscing about it, sparking a profound admiration for Noko. Later that day, Bashame is discovered sleeping on the concrete doorstep of the clubroom while waiting for Noko’s return. Her presence surprises Torako Koshi, whom Bashame informs of her desire to join the club and specifically become Noko’s student. She agrees with full determination, becoming the Deer Club’s third official member. Bashame has expressive brown eyes with fine eyelashes and olive green hair cut into a bob, featuring two leaf-like ahoge on top. Her bangs are slightly even, parted in the middle, and curve to frame her forehead. She wears a traditional Japanese navy-blue school uniform with a yellow scarf-tie, an almond-brown poet-sleeve cardigan, a navy-blue skirt folded to mid-thigh length, white mid-calf leg warmers, and brown leather loafers. Her personality is laid-back and sluggish, with a tendency to fall asleep almost anywhere, including on concrete. Initially lacking self-confidence but hopeful about making an impact in high school, she develops a passive obsession with idolizing Noko after the deer cracker incident. She exhibits a strong fascination with rice, often seen cooking, eating, or growing it—a passion tied to her belief in self-sufficiency. She habitually refers to herself in the third person, a speech pattern known as illeism. Bashame possesses an enhanced immunity, allowing her to sleep on cold surfaces without falling ill, and a noted defiance of narrative plots, consciously choosing to act according to her own will rather than follow predetermined storylines. Her skills are heavily centered around rice: she is highly proficient in rice-cooking, frequently seen with towering bowls of rice, and possesses significant agricultural knowledge, such as planting rice fields and diagnosing issues like rice blast disease. She is also a skilled mochi maker, though she once choked on a piece from eating too quickly. Within the Deer Club, Bashame often cooks rice dishes for the group, such as a meal made with mushrooms Noko grew illegally. She tends to her mini rice farm even during school events, wearing full farming gear at the sports festival and refusing to assist with other activities to focus on her crops. She is knowledgeable enough to diagnose agricultural issues, once identifying white spots on Noko as a rare case of rice blast. She also happily wears Noko’s molted skin, finding it comfortable and breathable. Her interactions with other club members are consistent. She is frequently paired with Anko Koshi in surrounding and questioning visitors, such as student council treasurer Chiharu Tsubameya. She corrects others on club seniority, asserting her status as a senpai to newcomers like Neko Nekoyamada, whom she initially deemed unfit as an honorary member but later respected after recognizing her potential. She is easily impressed by displays that align with her interests. Across various episodes, her activities remain centered on rice. She eats rice seasoned with Noko’s deer antler flakes, insists on being a whistler in a band despite poor ability, and engages in arguments over trivial matters. She participates in club streams remotely after being excluded by Torako and accompanies the club to the Deer God Shrine, where she prays for a rice paddy. She is also seen making her own mochi, which leads to her choking on it later. Her dedication to agriculture is further shown when she excitedly prepares to work on her rice paddy and rushes to ask for help. After Anko refuses due to a dislike of getting dirty, Bashame enlists the help of the newly-awoken Tsuchi. The two turn rice-planting into a race, spreading mud everywhere, and afterward take a break enjoying Anko’s rice balls. During broader events, she is present at the Deer Club’s confrontation with the organization Deer Hole. She delivers a letter of challenge to Noko from Sento-kun, the strongest mascot of Deer Hole, setting the stage for a major confrontation. Trivia notes that her first name, "Meme," means "husked grain of rice," and her surname, "Bashame," means "sprout," fitting her green hair and sprout-like ahoge. Her surname also contains the kanji for "horse," following an animal-naming convention. She is the only club member without a unique nickname ending in "-an" or "-tan," and she cannot whistle.
