Description
Akari Hizamaru is a Japanese man with a muscular build, originally sporting short brown hair and brown eyes that later changed to black hair and blue eyes. He stands 177 cm tall, weighing between 91 kg and 96 kg during missions, with blood type O and a birthday of August 2. His hobbies are illustration and reading; he dislikes cockroaches. Trained in an old form of Jiu-Jitsu at his orphanage director's dojo, Akari's life was shaped by the death of his childhood friend, Yuriko Minamoto, from the A.E. virus. Seeking a cure, he joined the Annex Project.

Before Annex I, Akari fought in a Bangkok underground arena. During a match against a starved bear, the trauma of Yuriko's death triggered an uncontrolled partial insectoid transformation. In this feral state, he gained enhanced strength, gouged out the bear's eye, and crushed its skull. Post-fight, he confronted Yuriko's traffickers, learning she was sold to Shokichi Komachi, who informed him of her death. Akari attacked Shokichi in rage but agreed to join the Mars mission upon hearing it sought a cure.

Akari radiates cheerful, good-hearted energy, strongly believing in friendship and honor. He strives to keep promises and deeply cares for comrades, especially Michelle K. Davis. While straightforward, he displays strategic acumen and combat prowess, saving Michelle from specialized Terra Formars. Emotional volatility can trigger uncontrolled transformations, rendering him unstable until subdued or reminded of his identity.

Biologically unique, Akari was born Post-Surgery with a Mosaic Organ, inheriting DNA from four parents—including Zhang Ming-Ming and Nanao Akita—who underwent the BUGS procedure. This granted him base insect transformation without initial surgery. For Annex I, he underwent the M.O. Operation, integrating Eumeta japonica (Japanese Bagworm Moth) traits. This allows him to generate near-invisible, flexible silk threads of exceptional strength, uncuttable by Terra Formars. He uses these threads tactically to weave bulletproof vests or manipulate objects. The surgery also incorporated treehopper traits, providing an open circulatory system, armored skin, and enhanced strength.

On Mars, extreme duress expanded Akari's abilities. Michelle's sacrifice protecting him triggered rage that awakened latent Orchid Mantis DNA inherited from Zhang Ming-Ming, manifesting a mantis claw arm and toothed threads with mini-claws. After returning to Earth, he underwent C.B. Operation, gaining Over-Metamorphosis. This ability allows absorption of M.O. Operation traits from others like Shokichi Komachi and Michelle. His chimera form incorporates twin poisonous stings (launchable as projectiles), mantis claws on his elbows, butterfly silk wings from Nanao Akita, and head rotation. He replicates combat techniques from multiple Annex I members, enhancing versatility.

Akari wields the Hizamaru, an Anti-Terra Formar Sonic Ninja Blade, employing the Hizamaru Divine Eye Dojo swordsmanship style. Later, he receives the Hizamaru Shadow Strike, an Anti-Terra Formar Belt Sword worn around his waist; its segments detach and connect via his silk threads into a functional blade. His combat techniques include the Pensioner's Stance (a deceptive sword maneuver) and Double Hand Cannon (an internal-damage strike mimicking Fa Jin).

Etymologically, "Akari" comes from Japanese for "light, lamp, or lantern" (燈), while "Hizamaru" combines "knee" (膝) and "round" (丸), referencing the legendary sword Hizamaru used by samurai Minamoto no Yorimitsu to slay a yōkai. Akari's name variants across languages share this meaning, as noted in a message left with him during abandonment.
