Description
Nyanko-sensei, formally called Madara, is a high-level youkai who typically appears as a rotund, white maneki-neko with orange and grey markings on his head and back, small red facial markings, and a red collar with a gold bell. Humans often perceive this form as cute and fluffy, sometimes noting its unusually large head. His true form is a colossal, white wolf-like beast with red facial markings and golden eyes, large enough to conceal a human under one paw. This powerful form commands fear and respect among other youkai but remains invisible to humans lacking spiritual energy.

Long ago, an unidentified powerful exorcist sealed Madara inside a maneki-neko statue, imprisoning him for decades in a forest shrine. His confinement ended when Takashi Natsume accidentally broke the sealing rope while fleeing another youkai. Upon release, Madara attacked Takashi to seize the "Book of Friends," a ledger created by Takashi's grandmother, Reiko, containing names of youkai bound to her will. Learning Takashi cherished the book as a connection to Reiko and intended to return the names, Madara proposed a contract: he would act as Takashi's bodyguard in exchange for inheriting the book upon the boy's death. While Madara denies his name is in the book, claiming he was too powerful for Reiko to defeat, he acknowledges a close past relationship with her.

Madara moves into the Fujiwara household as Takashi's pet cat, insisting he is the "master." His personality is proud, selfish, and comedicly condescending. He frequently complains about Takashi's kindness but gradually develops genuine fondness for him and his human companions. He exhibits immature tendencies: indulging in sake to drunkenness, obsessively eating sweets like dango, stealing food (especially Touko Fujiwara's cooking), and chasing small animals or bullying dogs. Despite vehemently denying feline traits, he displays cat-like behaviors such as reacting to toys or napping excessively. His attachment to Takashi deepens, leading him to proactively protect the boy, even in life-threatening situations—transforming to shield him from exorcists or guarding the Fujiwara home. This protective instinct extends to Takashi's foster parents, whom he appreciates for their food and kindness.

His abilities reflect his status as a powerful daiyokai. In his beast form, he possesses immense strength and flies without visible means. As a cat, he emits spiritual light from his forehead mark to repel youkai or project his beast form's presence. He shapeshifts between his cat, beast, and human forms—the latter only mimicking Takashi or Reiko, whom he observed closely. He also claims an unseen "old man" form.

Madara's development centers on evolving relationships. His bond with Takashi shifts from transactional to familial; he expresses regret Takashi isn't immortal and shows vulnerability when the boy is endangered. He tolerates Takashi's friends like Kaname Tanuma (nicknamed "Ponta") and exorcist Shuuichi Natori, though distrusting the latter. He avoids Tooru Taki due to her obsessive fawning over his cat form and openly antagonizes Matoba clan leader Seiji Matoba, sensing his sinister aura. Touko Fujiwara dotes on him, calling him "Nyankichi," while Shigeru Fujiwara amiably calls him "Nyangoro."

Trivia notes include his weight gain across the series, Midorikawa's inspiration from a childhood ceramic maneki-neko, and his various nicknames beyond "Nyanko-sensei."
