Description
Norland von Lunebelg, a genetically engineered clone of Emperor Charles zi Britannia, was originally crafted as a vessel for Charles's consciousness transfer. This purpose became obsolete after Charles's death. Rising through the ranks of the Holy Britannian Empire's military, he achieved the prestigious position of Knight of Five within the Knights of the Round. His formidable combat prowess, strategic brilliance, and mastery of Knightmare Frame piloting commanded widespread fear and respect. During this time, he rescued Catherine Sabathra from a kidnapper, securing her unwavering loyalty, and engineered the Vogue Scheme, recruiting war orphans for adoption by Britannian nobles.
He selected the Phoenix brothers, Ash and Nichol, but took only Ash under his direct care. Exploiting Ash's desperation to remain with Nichol, Norland trained him as a child soldier and assassin. Ash later became the Knight of Thirteen, executing assassinations for Norland, while Nichol secretly endured similar missions. Following the Britannian Empire's collapse after Lelouch vi Britannia's demise, Norland established the Lunebelg Dominion. He declared war on the nascent Britannia Republic only to surrender swiftly, a diversion allowing him to rally anti-UFN Britannian remnants and launch a surprise invasion of Hokkaido, Japan. Collaborators helped bypass the Situmpe Wall, leading to a successful occupation and the founding of the Neo-Britannian Empire under figurehead Emperor Prince Callis al Britannia.
As the de facto ruler of Neo-Britannia, Norland served as the Emperor's advisor, commanded the Einberg Order under the title King Weiss, and wielded authority far surpassing the puppet rulers. When Nichol assumed responsibility for a mission failure involving Ash, Norland executed him. This act provoked Ash's failed revenge attempt and subsequent imprisonment. Norland later orchestrated Callis's assassination, installing Sakura Haruyanagi-no-miya—posing as Sakuya Sumeragi—as the 101st Empress to legitimize his regime.
Norland embodied ruthlessness and stoicism, viewing human life with complete disregard as expendable resources. He expressed no remorse for the suffering he inflicted. After capturing Sakuya Sumeragi, he sought Geass power. His ultimate motive, revealed to be the extermination of humanity, stemmed not from ideology, revenge, or nihilism, but from pure, unadulterated disgust for humankind. He deployed autonomous L.O.K.I. weapons globally to massacre populations indiscriminately, including his own forces, believing himself fundamentally separate from and superior to humanity, whose eradication would grant him peace.
In the final confrontation, Norland piloted the advanced Knightmare Frame Foulbout, using its energy-draining beam weapons to efficiently incapacitate opponents. He defeated Catherine Sabathra and Ash Phoenix by disabling their Knightmares, dismissing them as insignificant. However, Ash and Sakuya pierced his cockpit with their Knightmare's blades, mirroring Nichol's death. Fatally wounded, Norland remained apathetic to his defeat, dying with a faint smile. His actions across media consistently reflect his role as a manipulative strategist and genocidal entity.
