Description
Shāng Bù Huàn hailed from Xī Yōu, born roughly two centuries after the War of the Fading Dusk. In his youth, he forged deep bonds with Mù Tiān Mìng and Tiān Gōng Guǐ Jiàng. Witnessing the Xī Yōu imperial government wield mystical weapons—relics from the War—to violently assimilate southern tribes spurred him to become a wandering swordsman. Determined to halt the devastation, he undertook a mission to steal these weapons, sealing them within the Sorcerous Sword Index, a magical scroll crafted by Guǐ Jiàng.

A theft from the Imperial palace brought him face-to-face with Làng Wū Yáo. Learning Shāng Bù Huàn's purpose, Wū Yáo joined him and Tiān Mìng. Their actions branded Shāng Bù Huàn a criminal, drawing pursuit from the Imperial army and factions like the Order of the Divine Swarm. A critical battle against the Order's leader, Huò Shì Míng Huáng, ended in defeat and Tiān Mìng's blinding, as Shāng Bù Huàn refused to use the Index's swords even when overpowered. Convinced his restraint caused harm, he fled Xī Yōu alone with the Index.

His journey led through the Wasteland of Spirits, a land scarred by the War. Perilous encounters tested him, including severing a dragon's wing to escape and eradicating a cannibal village, showcasing resilience while leaving unintended consequences.

Arriving in Dōng Lí, Shāng Bù Huàn sought solitude but became entangled after taking an umbrella from a rain-drenched Buddha statue. A nearby stranger implied this act demanded a good deed, compelling him to rescue Dān Fěi, a Seal Guardian hunted by the Xuán Guǐ Zōng cult. Attempts to disengage failed when cult notices declared him an enemy, forcing a reluctant alliance with figures like Lǐn Xuě Yā (alias Guǐ Niǎo) and Shòu Yún Xiāo. Their quest aimed to retrieve the Tiān Xíng Jiàn's hilt from the cult's stronghold in the Demon Spine Mountains.

He endured multiple trials: expulsion from a protective circle during a zombie onslaught—a test by allies—and infiltration of the cult's Seven Sins Tower. A confrontation with leader Miè Tiān Hái led to imprisonment. After escaping, he protected Dān Fěi and Juǎn Cán Yún from cult forces, revealing his weapon was a blunt wooden sword and demonstrating extraordinary prowess even wielding a tree branch. At the Tiān Xíng Jiàn's temple, he deployed Jie Huang Jian—a sword from the Sorcerous Sword Index—to banish the reawakened demonic god Yāo Tú Lí into a spatial vortex. He then entrusted guardianship of the sword to Juǎn Cán Yún, Dān Fěi, and the Seal Guardians.

Shāng Bù Huàn consistently displayed a paradoxical nature: outwardly cynical, apathetic, and self-described as a "slob," yet driven by profound compassion to shield others. He avoided forming ties, often departing without farewells to prevent others from being drawn into his troubles, though this sometimes backfired. His philosophy rejected revenge, focusing solely on protecting innocents from the corrupting influence of powerful weapons. This commitment drew villains pursuing the Sorcerous Sword Index across subsequent conflicts.

Following the Tiān Xíng Jiàn incident, Lǐn Xuě Yā gifted him an umbrella, which he later returned to the Buddha statue, fulfilling the implied debt. His travels continued, marked by encounters testing his resolve to bear burdens alone while inadvertently aiding those he met.
