Description
Mù Tiān Mìng is a recurring supporting character in the Thunderbolt Fantasy series, including the film Thunderbolt Fantasy Sword Seekers -The Finale-. She is a master of the guzheng, rarely seen without her instrument named Qī Fèng Zhēng, which is crafted to resemble a phoenix. Her musical skill is central to her identity and abilities; she can channel qi through her guzheng to produce sonic blasts for both attack and defense at a distance. Concealed within the instrument are two blades: a short sword called Líng Fēng and a short dagger called Piāo Yǔ, which she can wield in close combat. She is also proficient in techniques such as the Sorrowful Wet Snowfall Technique and the Parting Lovers' Sorrow Technique.
Mù Tiān Mìng first encounters Làng Wū Yáo while he works as a singer at a tavern in the region of Xī Yōu. They meet one night at a moonlit pavilion where she plays the opening verse of a song called Crescent Cutlass on her guzheng. She explains that the song was once popular in the court of the Phoenix Light Palace but was left unfinished when its composer disappeared. She and Làng Wū Yáo become fast friends, meeting at the same pavilion on multiple occasions. During one meeting, she encourages him to face the voice he hears when he is alone, believing it to be his inner voice. Later, after Làng Wū Yáo is taken to the Phoenix Light Palace to compete for the position of court virtuoso, Mù Tiān Mìng enters the palace under the guise of competing herself in order to reunite with him and assist him.
In the broader story, Mù Tiān Mìng becomes an ally of Shāng Bù Huàn and Làng Wū Yáo, helping them collect the swords that form the Sorcerous Sword Index. She is a steadfast and supportive presence, often offering guidance and encouragement to those around her. After being blinded by the antagonist Huò Shì Míng Huáng, she adapts by relying on her exceptionally keen hearing to navigate the world, a skill she develops to such a degree that Tiān Gōng Guǐ Jiàng sometimes forgets she cannot see. However, this reliance on hearing makes her vulnerable to sudden loud noises, a weakness that is exploited by enemies during battles.
In Thunderbolt Fantasy Sword Seekers -The Finale-, Mù Tiān Mìng works alongside Tiān Gōng Guǐ Jiàng at a shrine where they attempt to understand the capabilities of a mysterious sword called the Fú Róng Huì Dāo (sometimes transcribed as the Tiān Xíng Jiàn). As the demon army launches its assault on the human world, she and Tiān Gōng Guǐ Jiàng sense the coming battle and are later discovered by demons while searching for the character Cháo Fēng in the demon realm. Despite the dangerous miasma that empowers demons beyond their usual strength, Mù Tiān Mìng fights alongside her companions. In one confrontation, Tiān Gōng Guǐ Jiàng transforms his mech's arms into a sound system and connects it to her guzheng, allowing her to amplify her sonic attacks to devastating effect. Throughout the film, her determination and loyalty to her friends remain unwavering, and she plays a vital role in the final struggle against the demonic forces.
