TV Special
Description
Haruko Akagi, younger sister to Shohoku High's basketball captain Takenori Akagi, stands between 156-165 cm tall and weighs approximately 42-48 kg, with brown hair and eyes. This kind, friendly, yet emotionally dense and naive first-year student provides steadfast support for the team. Her pivotal role emerges when she approaches Hanamichi Sakuragi after his 50th rejection, asking if he likes basketball—prompting his decision to join the team. She identifies his athletic potential after witnessing his jump during a dunk attempt, believing he could become the team's savior. Though knowledgeable about basketball from learning layups from her brother, recurring injuries forced her to quit after middle school and prevent cheerleading participation, leaving her unathletic and uncoordinated; she later sustains a knee injury practicing with Sakuragi.

Haruko maintains a close friendship with Sakuragi, attending practices and games with friends Fujii and Matsui. She teaches him layups, helps buy basketball shoes, and comforts him after defeats like the Kainan match. Academically capable, she tutors Sakuragi and other starters facing academic disqualification before nationals. She defends Sakuragi from criticism but briefly misjudges him after a fight involving Kaede Rukawa, later apologizing. Her unrequited crush on Rukawa, stemming from witnessing his junior high prowess, leads her to repeatedly attempt interactions. His indifference and basketball focus gradually make her acknowledge her feelings' futility, contrasting with her obliviousness to Sakuragi's persistent romantic interest.

During the national championship against Sannoh, Sakuragi suffers a back injury and confesses his genuine love for basketball—an indirect declaration of his feelings for her—leaving her stunned and blushing. She cries tears of joy after his game-winning shot. Post-tournament, she becomes the team's second manager, maintaining weekly correspondence with Sakuragi during rehabilitation. Her letters update him on the team while expressing encouragement and anticipation for his return; phrases like "I'll be waiting for you" suggest a potential shift in her feelings. In the epilogue "10 Days After," she reads Sakuragi’s recovery update with visible pleasure and continues writing, reaffirming her eagerness for his comeback as the "rebound king." She sustains a respectful, supportive relationship with her brother, consistently cheering his dedication to basketball.
