Description
Shūji Itō, a blue-haired, red-eyed resident of Side 6's Izuma Colony, eludes military police actively seeking him for painting vast graffiti murals called Kira-Kira across colony exteriors, which he continually updates. He makes his home within a decommissioned airlock leading to a junkyard, often accompanied by Conch, the small orange cube-shaped quadruped robot he built and modified, typically perched on his head. Shūji dresses casually in street clothes—a short-sleeved shirt over a tank top, white pants, gray gloves, and boots—even while piloting his mobile suit. His demeanor is consistently laid-back and enigmatic, approaching interactions with intuitive calm, contrasting sharply with his intense combat focus where he demonstrates exceptional tactical acumen.
His actions are frequently guided by the gMS-α Red Gundam, the mobile suit he pilots. He consults it for decisions—like joining Clan Battles or pursuing objectives such as traveling to Earth to find "a rose"—and relays its perceived "comments" to allies Amate Yuzuriha (Machu) and Nyaan. Under the alias "Haraheri Mushi" (Hungry Tapeworm/Bug), referencing his constant hunger, Shūji participates in underground Clan Battles to earn money for undisclosed purposes. Machu recognizes his graffiti and invites him to join her team, the Pomeranians, making him her MAV (partner pilot). Their partnership yields a winning streak, planning to save prize money for a glider to reach Earth.
In combat, Shūji proves formidable, harnessing the Red Gundam's Alpha Psycommu system and Bit weapons. He forces the retreat of trained Newtype soldier Xavier Olivette and defeats former Federation ace Shiiko Sugai ("The Witch") piloting a Gelgoog. Shiiko, obsessed due to her MAV being killed years prior by Char Aznable piloting the same Red Gundam, is killed by Shūji in this confrontation, deeply traumatizing Machu.
Shūji's relationship with Machu evolves into a deep emotional connection. They communicate semi-telepathically through the Kira-Kira phenomenon. Fleeing Izuma after his hideout is compromised, Shūji disappears during a Zeknova explosion triggered by the awakening of "the rose," mirroring Char Aznable's disappearance in UC 0079. He later reveals to Machu his wish to protect the "Rose Girl."
Resurfacing as a spiritual entity, Shūji guides Machu through confrontations involving Char Aznable and Kycilia Zabi. He discloses his origin from the "other side," a world where the Rose of Sharon (linked to Lalah Sune) once existed. He entered the GQuuuuuuX reality—a parallel world created by Lalah—to end it, seeking to spare her the sorrow of witnessing Char's death across multiverses. He reveals repeatedly destroying Lalah's awakened incarnations and their worlds to prevent this. In the final conflict, he opposes Char's plan to eliminate Lalah, arguing it would cause universal unraveling. After battling Machu within the GQuuuuuuX and hearing Lalah's wishes through her, he relinquishes his mission. Expressing gratitude and love to Machu, he shares a kiss with her before disappearing with Lalah and the Red Gundam in a final Zeknova, returning to the other side with a promise of eventual reunion.
Shūji previously met Char Aznable, possibly after a Zeknova event, where Char entrusted him with the Red Gundam. Challia Bull was unaware of Shūji's existence. His interactions with Nyaan involve her delivering installer devices; she shortens his name to "Shu-chan" and accepts deferred payment via Clan Battle earnings.
