TV-Series
Description
Akira Kogane commands a team of five space explorers from Earth. After a deep-space voyage, they returned to Earth in 1999 to find the planet devastated by nuclear war. Captured by the Galra Empire, they were enslaved on Planet Galra (also known as Planet Doom) and forced to fight in Emperor Daibazaal's arena. During captivity, Akira and another crew member gained multiple scars and received arm brands. Akira formulated an escape plan, leading the team to commandeer a slave ship and flee to Planet Altea.

On Altea, Akira and his team encountered Princess Fala and her adviser Raible. They learned of the legendary super-robot Golion, split into five mechanical lions by a cosmic goddess as punishment for its arrogance. Akira initially piloted the Green Lion until the fifth key was recovered, after which he transferred to the Black Lion, forming Golion's head and torso. He became the team's leader, earning the nickname "Chief" from his comrades.

Akira demonstrated strategic acumen and adaptability in leadership. He maintained discipline while tailoring his approach to each teammate: channeling Isamu Kurogane's argumentative nature into tactical feedback, granting Tsuyoshi Seidou operational flexibility to accommodate his fear of heights, affirming Hiroshi Suzuishi's value to prevent overprotection, and upholding professionalism with Princess Fala despite developing feelings for her. After the death of Blue Lion pilot Takashi Shirogane, Akira permitted Fala to assume the role despite objections from Raible and court lady Hys, recognizing her necessity for forming Golion.

His relationship with Fala involved balancing her royal status, combat responsibilities, and external threats like Prince Sincline's obsession. Akira occasionally yielded command to Fala for diplomatic alliances and trained her as a Black Lion backup pilot. He experienced profound grief when falsely led to believe Fala died, reacting with a skyward scream of despair.

Throughout the conflict with Galra, Akira evolved from stern oversight to measured trust in his team's capabilities. Early tactical gambles sometimes resulted in costly losses, leading to increased caution without sacrificing opportunism. He witnessed Earth's destruction during an unauthorized mission, intensifying his resolve to protect Altea. His leadership contributed to Galra's defeat in the final battle. His ultimate fate remains unspecified, though implications exist of a possible future with Fala.

In expanded media, the manga adaptation depicts Akira recruiting Fala as Blue Lion pilot after Shirogane's death. The *Super Robot Wars W* game introduces additional backstory: Akira and his team convinced Fala and Raible to seek refuge on Earth after Galra's invasion of Altea. During this storyline, he advocated for Fala's pilot training after Shirogane's fatal injury and was revealed to have attended Fuji Space School with teammate Gai Shishioh.

Akira is of mixed Japanese and Chinese descent, modeled after Hong Kong action stars. His surname "Kogane" translates to "gold," reflecting his leadership role. He is trained in martial arts and occasionally displays humanizing reactions, such as surprise upon seeing Fala in a bikini.
