Hammond, a Daggertooth pike conger Fish-Man, serves as a supporting antagonist with the New Fish-Man Pirates during the Fish-Man Island incident. His slim frame is marked by bright yellow skin, medium-length puffy orange hair, and a long, squarish neck bearing a small beard. A sharp, beak-like muzzle, razor-like teeth, and dark, glaring eyes define his face. Tattoos include the Arlong Pirates symbol near his left shoulder and the New Fish-Man Pirates mark on his right abdomen. He wears a long-sleeved black coat open over a striped shirt, frayed white pants to the shins, a mint-green sash, black sandals, a black fedora, and earrings on both ears.
Arrogant and convinced of Fish-Men superiority over humans—a belief shared with the late Arlong—Hammond takes pride in his race and denounces those he sees as subservient to humans. Yet he shows thoughtful calculation, carefully listing grievances and possible appeasements when confronting pirate crews, offering them the choice to join his own or be destroyed. He considers pirates enemies of humanity and displays nervousness around his captain, Hody Jones. His laughter echoes as "Hamo hamo hamo."
Like all Fish-Men, Hammond wields physical strength ten times that of a human, a trait magnified underwater, and can breathe indefinitely beneath the sea without aid. In combat, he employs the Utase Ami, a rifle that fires trawl nets to capture foes, and the Dorei Tank, a cannon platform moved by enslaved human pirates used as living wheels; those who collapse are chained and dragged behind.
In a non-canon incident, Hammond confronted Portgas D. Ace and the Spade Pirates at a Fish-Man Island restaurant, blaming humans for the Great Pirate Era. Ace struck him unconscious with Supreme King Haki before Hammond could attack.
During the Fish-Man Island Arc, Hammond—with Hyouzou and Kasagoba—confronted the Straw Hat Pirates after their escape from an undersea volcano. He gave Monkey D. Luffy an ultimatum: join the New Fish-Man Pirates or die. After Luffy refused, Hammond reported to Hody Jones and was ordered to capture the Straw Hats. He later met Luffy, Usopp, and Tony Tony Chopper, using the story of Fisher Tiger’s death from a refused human blood transfusion to justify fish-man law against sharing blood with humans. His net attack failed when Luffy repelled it, and a follow-up assault using a Sea Beast was thwarted by Luffy’s Supreme King Haki. Defeated, Hammond was carried off unconscious by Hyouzou.
He reappeared at Gyoncorde Plaza operating his Slave Tank until Nico Robin, at Jinbe’s request, freed the enslaved humans, who turned on him and threw him down. Recovering, he tried to net Robin but captured only a clone formed by her Devil Fruit powers. She created another clone on his back, which used multiple arms to grab his legs and execute a Double Clutch, breaking his back and defeating him. After the conflict, he was likely placed on probationary work with other lower-ranking crew members.
