Description
Kamotarō Itō served as an advisor to the Shinsengumi, prominently featured in the Shinsengumi Crisis arc. His childhood as Takahisa’s younger twin brother was marked by maternal neglect; his mother held him responsible for Takahisa’s frail health. Driven by this rejection, Kamotarō excelled academically and martially, earning the moniker "gifted child," yet his achievements bred jealousy and isolation. This fueled lifelong cynicism toward human bonds and profound loneliness, concealed beneath a veneer of competence.

Physically, he possessed pale skin, blond hair, and light green eyes, always wearing gray glasses. He appeared almost exclusively in the Shinsengumi uniform or, off-duty, a gray, white, and green hakama paired with red pants.

His personality blended ambition with deep-seated insecurity. Egotistical yet craving acceptance, he pursued validation through leadership, aspiring to command the Shinsengumi and ultimately dominate Edo. Though respected as "Itou-sensei" for his intellect, he remained emotionally detached. His defining dynamic was a rivalry with Vice-Commander Hijikata Toushirou—the sole person he believed understood him—which later tormented him with internal conflict.

During the Shinsengumi Crisis arc, his ambitions culminated in betrayal. He conspired with Takasugi Shinsuke of the Kiheitai to overthrow Commander Kondō Isao and seize control of the Shinsengumi. Unaware Takasugi manipulated him as a pawn to weaken the group, Itō suspended Hijikata and attempted to assassinate Kondō during a train journey to Bushuu. His treachery included abandoning Shinsengumi member Yamazaki Sagaru to die after Yamazaki exposed the plot.

Loyal Shinsengumi members and the Yorozuya, acting on Hijikata’s request, thwarted his scheme. During a duel with Hijikata aboard the train, Itō lost his left arm in a Kiheitai-orchestrated crash. This injury sparked a realization of his misplaced priorities and the genuine kinship he shared with the Shinsengumi. In a redemptive act, he sacrificed himself to shield Kondō and Hijikata from machine-gun fire by Kawakami Bansai’s helicopter. He died honorably in a final duel against Hijikata, disavowing the traitor’s identity.

Historically inspired by Ito Kashitaro—a real Shinsengumi figure who plotted against Kondō Isami—his name contrasted with his brother’s: "Takahisa" incorporated the kanji for "eagle," while "Kamotarō" used "duck," underscoring their divergent fates. This arc spans episodes 101–105 of the original series and is adapted into the compilation film *Gintama on Theater 2D: Shinsengumi Crisis Arc*, scheduled for release on February 7, 2025.
