Description
Dan Kuso is the main protagonist of the anime Bakugan Battle Brawlers. At the start of the series, he is a twelve-year-old boy living in the fictional city of Wardington with his parents, Miyoko and Shinjiro Kuso. His mother is notably enthusiastic about yoga, while his father shares Dan's spirited personality and has a notable obsession with pudding. Across the series, Dan ages, appearing as fourteen in New Vestroia, sixteen in Gundalian Invaders, and seventeen in Mechtanium Surge.
Personality-wise, Dan is initially defined by his impulsive, rash, and hot-headed nature. His love for Bakugan is matched only by his intense desire to win, often relying on raw power and brute strength in battles rather than strategy, caring little for the consequences. This recklessness and overconfidence frequently land him in trouble, and his eagerness to brawl makes him easily frustrated when forced to wait or plan in hiding. However, at his core, Dan is a natural leader who is athletic, outgoing, and fiercely loyal to his friends. He possesses a strong sense of justice and a never-say-die attitude, accepting any challenge to test his own capabilities. One of his defining characteristics is his belief in giving second chances, as he repeatedly offers redemption to former enemies such as Spectra Phantom and Ren Krawler.
Dan's primary motivation evolves throughout the series. Initially driven by a simple goal to become the number one ranked Bakugan brawler, his focus shifts as he becomes entangled in conflicts that threaten both Earth and the Bakugan homeworld of Vestroia. He is motivated by a deep desire to protect his friends, his partner Bakugan Drago, and both dimensions from various villains, including Naga, King Zenoheld, the Gundalians, and Mag Mel.
In the story, Dan serves as the central figure and leader of the Bakugan Battle Brawlers. His role evolves from a talented but reckless novice ranked 117th to earning the title of the world's top brawler. He is constantly at the forefront of the battle to save Vestroia, traveling to the Bakugan homeworld to aid the Resistance against the Vestal invaders, allying with the Neathian princess to fight the Gundalians, and confronting psychic manipulations in Bakugan Interspace.
The most significant relationship in Dan's life is with his guardian Bakugan, a Pyrus Dragonoid named Drago. Their bond is the emotional core of the series, transforming from early friction caused by Dan's reckless pursuit of victory to an unbreakable partnership built on mutual respect and growth. This relationship is tested severely when Dan, in a fit of frustration, throws Drago into a river after a victory that had dire consequences. The subsequent reconciliation after a loss to a rival named Ryo is a pivotal learning moment for Dan, teaching him that being a brawler involves more than just power. Among his human friends, he shares a long-standing, competitive, and supportive friendship with Shun Kazami, having known him since childhood. The series also heavily hints at a mutual romantic interest between Dan and Runo Misaki, a sparring partner of his, which builds throughout the seasons. He also acts as a mentor and ally to newer brawlers like Jake Vallory.
Dan undergoes significant development over the course of the series. While he remains impulsive at heart, he matures considerably, learning to incorporate strategy into his brawling and developing patience and leadership skills necessary to direct his allies in critical missions. His journey is marked by intense failures, such as having Drago captured by the Vexos' Spectra Phantom, which triggers deep emotional crises that he must overcome through training and self-reflection. Later, in Mechtanium Surge, he grapples with new, destabilizing powers granted by Code Eve, which cause him to lose control and spawn a destructive Mechtogan, leading to his disqualification and a temporary fracture in his team that forces him into self-imposed exile to master his abilities.
As a brawler, Dan possesses notable abilities and an extensive arsenal. He fights primarily with Pyrus attribute Bakugan and has exceptional reflexes and intuition in battle. His primary partner, Drago, undergoes numerous evolutions, including Delta Dragonoid, Ultimate Dragonoid, Neo Dragonoid, Cross Dragonoid, Helix Dragonoid, Lumino Dragonoid, Blitz Dragonoid, and Titanium Dragonoid. Beyond Drago, Dan has temporarily partnered with other Bakugan such as Pyrus Apollonir and Haos Reptak. He also utilizes various battle systems, including Battle Gear like the JetKor and Explosix Gear, Mobile Assault Vehicles, BakuNano, and powerful Mechtogan such as Zenthon and Zenthon Titan. His equipment includes signature goggles, which change design each season, and he is often seen wearing a red jacket or overcoat, reflecting his hot-blooded personality and Pyrus affinity.
