Description
Burton is one of the main characters in Ninjala. Before the events of the story, he was an adult scientist and researcher working for the World Ninja Association Research Institute, where he was put in charge of the top-secret project to develop Ninja-Gum. He is also a descendant of the famous historical ninja Hattori Hanzō, which makes his genetic heritage crucial for the project's goal of awakening dormant shinobi powers in those with ninja ancestry. After consuming a prototype of the Ninja-Gum, he was transformed into a child as a side effect, and he enters the Ninjala Tournament alongside his research partner Berecca in hopes of finding a way to return to his original age.
In his child form, Burton appears as a young, fair-skinned boy with messy blond hair and blue eyes. He wears purple glasses and purple headphones that cover his ears. His outfit consists of a purple shirt with a white and gold logo, a large blue jacket with an orange interior, and blue and gold shoes with white laces. His appearance and demeanor clearly mark him as the intellectual type.
Burton's personality is defined by his quirky, optimistic, and enthusiastic nature. Even after numerous failures, he maintains a cheerful and forward-looking attitude, and when faced with a strange or difficult situation, he is quick to see the bright side and adapt. He is an avid reader and is deeply passionate about science and experimentation, sometimes without regard for the potential danger. A notable trait is his admiration for the inventor Thomas Edison, whose quotes he has a habit of reciting. While he is a genius-level intellect and clearly the smartest member of the main cast, he can also be oblivious and absent-minded at times. Despite his lineage as a descendant of a powerful ninja, he is not aggressive by nature and is said to dislike conflict.
Burton's central role in the story is tied to his creation of the Ninja-Gum. For three years, he worked alongside his close friends Berecca and Ron, conducting over two thousand failed experiments. Burton remained optimistic throughout this period, encouraging his partners to press on. The breakthrough happened by accident during their 2,503rd test when his pet cat Goro jumped into the machine. After rescuing the cat, Burton noticed that Goro's bell had fallen into the machine, where it reacted with the Ninja-Gum formula and caused an explosion that created a successful prototype. After he and Berecca consumed the new gum, Ron, who was secretly an undercover agent, betrayed them and attempted to steal the formula. Burton was forced to use the Ninja-Gum's power to create a weapon and fight him off, revealing to Berecca for the first time that the gum was designed as a weapons technology. Berecca was furious at this deception, creating a rift between them that they must work to mend. Immediately following this, both realized they had been transformed into children, setting the main plot in motion.
Burton's key relationships shape much of his journey. His bond with Berecca is the most significant; they are research partners and close friends whose trust was damaged by Burton's secrecy but who must now rely on each other to find a cure for their condition. His relationship with Ron is complex; after Ron's betrayal, Burton still believes his friend had a good reason for his actions and continues to consider him a friend, leading to moments where he tries to reach out and reconnect. He also shares a warm, slightly comic relationship with his pet cat Goro. Over the course of the story, Burton forms connections with other characters, such as Jane, with whom he discovers common ground, and his teacher Bruce, who shows genuine concern for his well-being.
Throughout the narrative, Burton demonstrates notable development. He takes on a leadership role, such as when he attempts to build a secret base to share with Berecca and later opens it up to the whole class. He feels a sense of responsibility for the negative consequences arising from his research, including attacks by the Space Ninjas, and struggles with these inner conflicts while maintaining his outward cheerfulness. His willingness to forgive Ron and his determination to fight not just for himself but for Berecca as well show his capacity for growth and selflessness. In one story chapter, he even takes on a skateboarding challenge to save the day for a friend, showcasing his willingness to step outside his comfort zone and prove himself.
As a scientist and a ninja descendant, Burton's abilities are a unique blend of intellect and inherited combat prowess. His primary power comes from the Ninja-Gum, which allows him to create weapons, such as the Ippon Katana, by harnessing his Hattori Hanzō lineage. He is capable in battle, as demonstrated when he successfully fought against Ron, who was an undercover agent. While his friendly personality may not make him seem like a fighter, his ninja heritage and the power of the Ninja-Gum make him a formidable opponent. His true strength lies in his sharp mind and problem-solving skills, which he uses to develop new strategies and understand the science behind the Ninja-Gum and the threats it poses.
