Description
Kaede, younger sister to priestess Kikyo, lost her parents in childhood, leaving Kikyo as her sole guardian. She assisted her sister by gathering herbs and holding arrows during Kikyo's training. A demon attack cost Kaede her right eye; one account describes debris striking her eye after Kikyo shot a nearby demon, while another places the injury during the incident fifty years prior involving Inuyasha's sealing, where she also lost Kikyo.

Following Kikyo's death, Kaede assumed the role of village priestess, defending her community against demons. She immediately recognized Kagome Higurashi as Kikyo's reincarnation upon Kagome's arrival. When Kagome freed Inuyasha from the Sacred Tree, Kaede placed the "Beads of Subjugation" on him, enabling Kagome's control with the command "Sit." Kaede became a respected advisor on spiritual matters and demon lore, maintaining constant vigilance over the village.

During Kikyo's final death, Kaede witnessed soul collectors and received a spiritual farewell where Kikyo apologized for the suffering caused, underscoring their lifelong bond and Kaede's unresolved grief. Three years after Naraku's defeat and the Shikon Jewel's destruction, Rin came to live with Kaede to reintegrate into human society. Kaede also trained Kagome to hone her spiritual abilities, aiming to surpass Kikyo's prowess.

In her advanced age during *Hanyō no Yashahime*, Kaede continued mentoring Kagome through significant upheavals. She saw Sesshōmaru retrieve his newborn twin daughters, Towa and Setsuna, during a crisis. Later, Setsuna briefly resided in the village but left after nearly killing bandits, an act Kaede lamented given the girl's youth. When Setsuna returned permanently, Kaede explained her heritage to Hisui and recognized Moroha as Inuyasha and Kagome's daughter.

Kaede displayed resilience during Kirinmaru's assault, evacuating villagers at Kagome's request. Despite describing her own powers as limited, she fired multiple sacred arrows to repel demon hordes. Her personality reflects decades of hardship in the Sengoku period. She stated she no longer harbored intense concern for others' survival, likely due to age and experience, though she remained dedicated to caretaking. She expressed distress over Setsuna's violent actions, wishing for a less turbulent world for the young.

Physically, Kaede aged notably with gray hair, wrinkles, and a slim build. She wore a traditional miko robe, hakama, and an iron tsuba eyepatch. Her spiritual abilities included sutra magic, barrier conjuring, and demonic aura sensing. Though less potent than Kikyo or Kagome, she was a skilled archer and tactician. Her endurance persisted into old age, surviving injuries like Yura's attack that incapacitated her arm.

Calculations based on timeline details place Kaede in her early 80s during *Yashahime*, a rarity for her era, living approximately 14 years after the main *Inuyasha* events.
