Description
Gil originates as the Heroic Spirit sealed within the anomalous eighth Class Card, contradicting the expected seven cards for Miyu Edelfelt's ritual. Lost deep underground during transit to the "boundary of the real number region" between worlds, the card absorbed energy for over two months. This process weakened the Earth Pulse while strengthening Gil beyond previous Heroic Spirits. His immense ego partially resisted the card's corruption, resulting in only half-incarnation. This manifested him as a younger version of himself, while his other half remained corrupted, mindlessly seeking the Holy Grail like other card-bound spirits.
He resembles a child version of his original self, sharing golden hair and red eyes, typically worn down. Initially clad in attire reminiscent of his adult counterpart's past garments, he later adopts modern casual wear upon arriving in Miyu's world.
His personality blends regal arrogance with pragmatic cooperation. Retaining his core identity, he displays less overt vanity and ego than his adult self, adopting a conversational and at times aloof demeanor, even towards potential enemies. He willingly collaborates with Illya's group when objectives align, such as opposing the Ainsworth family, though often withholding crucial knowledge regarding Shirou Emiya, the Ainsworths, Miyu, or Kirei Kotomine's circumstances. Flashes of his original self's cruelty and sarcasm surface, particularly when confronting Angelica Ainsworth for wielding his friend Enkidu's power, insulting her as a "mongrel".
His role begins in *2wei!* as the group confronts his corrupted shadow form deep underground. This shadowy entity, composed of black mist, demonstrates immense power, effortlessly blocking combined attacks with the Shield of the Gods and unleashing Gate of Babylon's armaments. After escaping the Mirror World using Ea, it travels to Mount Enzou to activate a Holy Grail ritual. Illya inadvertently separates the younger Gilgamesh from this corrupted form during an attempt to stop the ritual. Though initially fused back with his shadow half—becoming a dark entity akin to Angra Mainyu—he is ultimately defeated by Illya's enhanced Zwei form, revealing his half-incarnated state limited his power, including Ea's full potential.
In *3rei!!*, he reemerges as a key protagonist after Illya arrives in Miyu's parallel world. He forms a reluctant alliance with Illya and Tanaka, motivated primarily by Angelica Ainsworth's use of his Class Card granting her control over the majority of his treasury, Gate of Babylon, severely restricting his access. His battle against Angelica highlights superior experience and mastery of Enkidu, though he retreats when she deploys multiple Class Cards. Later, he aids in freeing Rin Tohsaka, Luvia Edelfelt, and Shirou Emiya from Ainsworth control. A pivotal moment occurs when he retrieves his Class Card from Miyu—who briefly succumbed to its influence—using Enkidu. Restored to full power, he easily defeats Beatrice but halts his assault on Julian and Erika Ainsworth upon discerning Erika's true nature and Julian's plan involving a massive mud cube. Amused and intrigued, he notes the need for multiple Holy Grails to activate the cube before departing to observe events as a spectator.
His abilities reflect his unique status. Separation from the Class Card left him disconnected from most treasures in Gate of Babylon, limiting him to minor Noble Phantasms. However, he retains ownership of all weapons, allowing him to reclaim any fired by Angelica's Gate (recovering 264 weapons). Merging with his shadow half temporarily restores his full arsenal, but permanent recovery requires reclaiming the Class Card itself. The corrupted shadow form manipulates mist to deploy weapons as projectiles or tendrils, instantly regenerates damage, and wields Ea with devastating effect.
