Description
Masayoshi Komi is the father of Shouko Komi and the husband of Shuuko Komi. He is a middle-aged man with short black hair and glasses that often cover his eyes, which are shown to be dark purple. He carries himself with a quiet, cool, and stoic presence, rarely speaking and appearing outwardly stern. Like his daughter and his son Shousuke, Masayoshi struggles with a communication disorder and experiences difficulty expressing himself verbally, sometimes becoming easily flustered. Despite this, he is deeply kind, considerate, and supportive, demonstrating his care through actions rather than words. He compensates for his lack of speech with strong, deliberate gestures and is highly adept at non-verbal communication, holding entire silent conversations with his children through looks and subtle signals. This silent understanding is especially strong between him and Shouko, with whom he shares an intuitive bond. Masayoshi’s motivations center on his devotion to his family; he shows his love by being present, helpful, and reliable. In the story, his role is primarily as a supportive parent who provides context for Shouko’s own communication challenges, illustrating that her condition is partly inherited and that her family environment is one of mutual, wordless empathy. His relationship with Shuuko provides a contrast—her youthful, talkative energy balances his reserved nature, and she often finds amusement in their silent exchanges. Masayoshi develops little over the course of the series, but his consistent portrayal reinforces themes of familial understanding and acceptance. He is notably talented in a variety of practical skills, including baking, woodworking, motorcycle riding, and even sandcastle construction, all of which he performs with quiet competence and which serve as alternative ways to communicate his affection.
