Description
Meiya Mitsurugi is a central character who appears across the different narratives of the Muv-Luv series, with her role and personal history being most deeply explored in Muv-Luv Alternative. Her background is defined by her extraordinary lineage; she is the twin sister of Koubuin Yuuhi, the Shogun of Japan. Due to a superstitious belief that twins are an ill omen, Meiya was separated from her sister at birth and given to the Mitsurugi branch family to be raised in secret. Her very name, meaning darkness, contrasts with her sister’s name, meaning light, reflecting her designated role as a shadow. She was trained from a young age to serve as a body double, or a disposable political tool, for the Shogun, mastering everything from sword fighting and etiquette to speech patterns and strategy games like shogi. In the events leading to the story of Alternative, she is sent to Yokohama Base as a political hostage to demonstrate the Empire of Japan’s commitment to the international Alternative IV plan, where she becomes a trainee in the 207th B Training Unit.
Meiya possesses a deeply ingrained, noble, and righteous personality, holding herself to a strict code of honor reminiscent of bushido. She is consistently depicted as calm, composed, and incredibly disciplined, with a strong sense of duty as both a soldier and a member of the imperial family. Despite her formal and often serious demeanor, she is not cold; she is fiercely loyal and caring towards her comrades. Her upbringing was sheltered, which initially made her naive about commoner life, occasionally leading her to solve problems with the vast wealth of the Mitsurugi group. However, her core values remain unshaken, and she has an intense aversion to dishonorable actions such as cheating or hostage-taking. Throughout her time at the base, she struggles with the conflicting feelings between her duty as a soldier fighting for humanity and her profound obligation to the people and the imperial family of Japan.
Her primary motivation in the world of Alternative is to fulfill her duty and find her own path in a life largely predetermined for her. While she accepts her role as a political hostage and a soldier without hesitation, she also seeks to define her own identity beyond being the Shogun’s shadow. She is driven to become a capable Eishi, a tactical surface fighter pilot, and to prove her own worth. Her actions are often motivated by a desire to protect others, including her sister whom she has never directly met, and to uphold justice in the face of the alien BETA threat. Her relationship with the protagonist, Takeru Shirogane, is a central pillar of her character arc. She grows to deeply admire and love him, their bond forged through shared hardship and combat. However, her feelings become complicated as Takeru’s own emotional turmoil and his search for another person from his past create distance between them, leading Takeru to offer her the platonic role of his Noble Confidant instead of a romantic partner.
Throughout the story of Alternative, Meiya plays a prominent role that leverages her unique position. She uses her resemblance to the Shogun to directly intervene in a coup d'état, acting as a decoy to confront rebel leaders and nearly ending a rebellion through sheer force of will and conviction. This act showcases her personal courage and her willingness to sacrifice herself for the greater good. Her development is marked by an increasing sense of agency and the emotional weight of her difficult choices. She experiences profound guilt and self-doubt, particularly after a harsh confrontation with Takeru that contributes to his mental breakdown. Later, when she witnesses Takeru finally reunite with the person he was searching for, she makes the difficult decision to suppress her own romantic feelings and instead help repair their strained relationship, demonstrating significant emotional maturity and selflessness.
In terms of abilities, Meiya is recognized as a prodigy in close-quarters combat, being exceptionally skilled with knives and, most notably, swords. She is a master of the Mugen Kidou style of swordsmanship, wielding a famous blade named Kailu Kamui. This talent translates directly to her role as a tactical surface fighter pilot, where her proficiency in melee combat makes her a formidable asset. She is eventually assigned to the elite A-01 Valkyries squadron. Her status is further emphasized by her exclusive access to a purple Type-00R Takemikazuchi, a highly advanced tactical surface fighter gifted by the Japanese Shogunate, which she pilots into battle. Her personal attendants, a team of guardians including Tsukuyomi Mana from the Imperial Royal Guard, are ever-present, highlighting her immense political value, even though Meiya herself often dislikes the special treatment.
