Description
Sumika Kagami is Takeru Shirogane's childhood friend and neighbor, their bond forming a central emotional anchor. In the original Extra timeline, she displays a bubbly, airheaded personality prone to a short temper. She frequently engages in playful physical fights with Takeru, often starting with her signature "Drill Milky Punch". Despite academic struggles, she maintains persistent optimism and deep devotion to Takeru, documenting their shared memories and her unspoken romantic feelings in a diary. Her identity centers intensely on him, fostering self-doubt about her appeal compared to others like Meiya Mitsurugi, though their rivalry stays amicable.
When Takeru shifts to the Unlimited timeline, Sumika is absent. No records or memories of her exist among other characters, though residual emotional imprints and speech mannerisms from the Extra timeline subtly influence them. Takeru confirms her erasure, deepening his isolation. This absence stems from her role in the Alternative timeline’s events.
In the Alternative timeline, Sumika and Takeru were captured during Yokohama's fall to the BETA. After witnessing Takeru die defending her, she endured torture and experimentation that left only her brain intact. This trauma, fused with her desperate desire to reunite with Takeru, triggered a resonance across timelines, inadvertently erasing her from the Unlimited/Alternative world. UN forces later recovered her brain. Kouzuki Yuuko utilized it to create the 00 Unit—a bio-computer interface—stating Sumika's death was unavoidable due to technological limitations in sustaining brains outside BETA systems. The 00 Unit initially harbored only virulent hatred towards the BETA. Takeru's efforts to restore her memories gradually reawakened fragments of her original identity.
Sumika's legacy persists through the 00 Unit, which retains her appearance and fragmented consciousness. During the final operation against the BETA Superior, this unit merges with the Susano-O mecha. To destroy the Superior, Takeru fires its particle cannon, killing the enemy and Meiya (the pilot). The strain overwhelms the 00 Unit, causing Sumika’s final death. In the spin-off Altered Fable, her "Drill Milky Punch" evolves into the "Drill Milky Phantom", a move of such force it propels her into orbit.
Thematically, her name ("Kagami" meaning "mirror") and association with the Yata no Kagami (one of Japan’s Three Sacred Treasures) symbolize reflection and fragmented reality. Her experiences explore trauma, existential erasure, and the persistence of love across altered realities.
