Description
Kokoro Anzai, a first-year junior high student, withdraws from school after severe psychological bullying orchestrated by classmate Miori Sanada. Beginning with social exclusion and escalating to violent threats, this torment inflicts intense fear, shame, and isolation. Kokoro retreats completely, confined to her darkened bedroom, unable to eat properly or connect with the outside world, despite her parents' patient yet initially ineffective support. Feeling gaslit and doubting adults could understand her trauma, she cannot articulate her suffering.
One day, her bedroom mirror suddenly glows, transporting her to a mysterious castle inhabited by the Wolf Queen. Within this sanctuary, Kokoro encounters six other adolescents avoiding school due to their own diverse struggles. Mirroring her real-world distrust, she remains wary of connection but gradually forms tentative friendships, particularly bonding with fellow gamers like Masamune and finding unexpected camaraderie during shared meals and games in the castle's common areas. These interactions become a vital emotional outlet, letting her lower her defenses and practice trust safely.
The castle provides the emotional safety missing from Kokoro's daily life. Participating in group events like a Christmas celebration, she experiences moments of joy and slowly regains a sense of belonging. This burgeoning confidence empowers her to disclose the full extent of the bullying to her mother, triggering active parental intervention and school counselor support—a significant step in confronting her trauma.
As the castle's deadline nears, Kokoro discovers an illustration of "The Wolf and the Seven Young Goats," recognizing it as a clue pointing to the hidden Wishing Key within a grandfather clock. When fellow resident Aki breaks the castle's curfew, triggering a catastrophic event that endangers all seven children, Kokoro uses the key to make a selfless wish: saving Aki from being consumed by the wolf. This sacrifice highlights her growth from a fearful victim to someone prioritizing others' safety.
After the castle closes, Kokoro learns the seven children originated from different timelines spanning four decades within the same universe. Armed with newfound resilience from her experiences and friendships, she chooses to return to school. Carrying forward lessons of connection and courage, she reconciles with a former classmate also victimized by Miori, demonstrating a commitment to face her future with hope.
