Description
Johann is a supporting character in the narrative who belongs to the dhampir race, meaning he is of mixed human and vampire heritage. As a dhampir, he exists on the fringes of both societies, fully accepted by neither. To make a living in this precarious position, Johann works as an information broker, cooperating closely with his two fellow dhampirs, Dante and Riche. He is a young man with a pale complexion, light, wavy hair, and thin eyebrows. He is typically seen wearing spectacles and a formal black suit with large lapels and padded sleeves over a white dress shirt, complemented by thin black gloves and formal dress pants. A small bat is often perched on his shoulder, a common companion for dhampirs.

Johann typically displays a flamboyant and animated personality. His manner of speech is often teasing and flirtatious, and he is physically affectionate with those he considers close, sometimes brushing against them or wrapping an arm around them while talking. This cheerful and affable demeanor, however, is suggested to be a mask or a learned persona that he uses when interacting with people outside his small dhampir family. Beneath this surface, he has a short temper and is capable of great anger and violence, particularly when his loved ones are threatened. Unlike his partner Dante, who seeks acceptance from humans and vampires, Johann is portrayed as being genuinely content with the acceptance and love he receives from his own small, three-person family unit.

His primary motivation is the protection of his fellow dhampirs, Dante and Riche, whom he views as his true family. He is deeply protective of them and can become fiercely angry if he believes they are in danger. For instance, he expressed a willingness to kill the main character Vanitas when the vampire-doctor threatened Dante at knifepoint. During the Return of the Beast arc, after being separated from Dante, Johann was visibly frustrated and short-tempered until they were reunited, at which point he became emotional and expressed regret for bringing his friend along on the dangerous mission.

In the story, Johann, along with Dante and Riche, functions as a recurring ally to the protagonists Vanitas and Noé. He provides them with valuable information regarding curse-bearers and other underworld happenings, aiding in their quest. He played a part in several major story arcs, including the Thomas Berneux case and the Hunters of the Dark arc, and accompanied the main party to the village of Gévaudan to investigate the Beast incident. During the Gévaudan arc, he was tasked with keeping an eye on Noé, who has a tendency to get lost, and later found the cabin where the injured Vanitas and Jeanne were resting after an avalanche.

Johann’s key relationships are centered on his dhampir companions. He shares a close and teasing bond with Dante, often making fun of his fears but also feeling a strong sense of responsibility for his safety. He is similarly overprotective of Riche, fretting over her when she puts herself in danger. While he can be friendly and flirtatious with others, such as referring to Noé as darling, this behavior is often part of his outward persona rather than a reflection of genuine closeness.

Throughout the narrative, Johann’s development is subtle but significant, primarily revealing the depth of the rage and protectiveness that lies beneath his cheerful exterior. The mask slips most notably in the Gévaudan arc when, after a tense reunion with Dante, Vanitas threatens his friend. At this moment, Johann’s usual smile vanishes, replaced by a blank stare as he calmly threatens to murder Vanitas if he makes another move, showcasing the serious and dangerous individual underneath the flamboyant informant.

Regarding notable abilities, as a dhampir, Johann possesses enhanced speed, strength, and endurance due to his part-vampire heritage. In addition to these physical attributes, he has demonstrated the use of a net gun in combat, which he deployed against members of the Chasseur, the church's anti-vampire army.
