Description
Astolfo Granatum is a character from the anime and manga series The Case Study of Vanitas. He is a teenage boy who serves the Catholic Church as a member of the Chasseurs, an organization dedicated to hunting vampires. Specifically, Astolfo holds the title of Paladin of Garnet, which makes him one of the twelve captains who command the Chasseur forces. At only fifteen years old, he is the youngest individual in history to ever achieve this rank.

In terms of his background, Astolfo was born into the Granatum family, a lineage that has long been associated with the Chasseurs and has held the Garnet seat for generations. As a young child, he was described as timid and kind-hearted. He once secretly befriended an injured vampire boy his own age, choosing to help him rather than report him to the authorities. This act of compassion led to tragedy when the vampire brought his companions to the Granatum home. Astolfo’s family was tortured and killed over several days, and he was forcibly marked with the Mark of Possession thirteen times before being rescued by the Chasseurs, led by Roland Fortis.

This traumatic event fundamentally shaped his personality. The once gentle boy grew into a violent, obsessive, and sadistic young man who harbors a genocidal hatred for all vampires. He openly declares that a Chasseur’s duty is not to protect humans, but to exterminate vampires, and he shows little regard for human life when it interferes with his goals. He is known by the nickname the Chasseur’s problem child due to his extreme and brutal behavior. He has a volatile temper and is easily enraged, particularly when he is mistaken for a girl due to his androgynous appearance, when he is touched without consent, or when he is compared unfavorably to his fellow paladin, Roland Fortis.

Astolfo’s primary motivation is the complete eradication of all vampires, a goal born from his overwhelming trauma, self-loathing, and survivor’s guilt. He blames himself for trusting a vampire, which led to his family’s murder, and he channels this self-hatred into a relentless crusade against their entire species.

In the story, Astolfo plays a significant role as an antagonist during the Beast of Gévaudan arc. He leads the Chasseur unit sent to eliminate the beast, where he comes into direct conflict with the protagonists, Noé Archiviste and Vanitas. His extreme methods and unwavering hatred create a stark contrast with the series' more nuanced portrayals of human-vampire relations.

His key relationships are defined by his past. He has a profound and complicated relationship with Roland Fortis, the paladin who saved him. Initially, Astolfo worshipped Roland as a perfect savior. However, after Roland gave up on trying to rehabilitate him following a brutal mission, Astolfo’s admiration curdled into intense resentment and hatred. Despite this, he still seems to unconsciously seek comfort from Roland in moments of extreme duress. He is also attended by Marco, a subordinate who calls him young master and shows genuine concern for his well-being, though Astolfo often treats him with casual violence.

Astolfo’s development shows a tragic fall from grace. Flashbacks reveal he was a kind child who believed in the possibility of peace. The trauma of his family’s death and his subsequent indoctrination by the Chasseurs transformed him into a vengeful killer. His mental state is fragile, and he frequently relives his family’s murder when triggered, descending into panic or a mindless rage. A crucial moment in his development occurs during a mission to rescue children from vampires. When the rescued children sympathized with their captors, Astolfo slaughtered them all as heretics, an act that made even Roland declare him beyond salvation.

Astolfo possesses several notable abilities that make him a formidable fighter despite his age. His primary weapon is a mechanized spear named Louisette, which he calls the Pillar of Justice. This spear can extend its shaft to change its length unpredictably and can be charged to create an explosion. He also uses injectable steroids, referred to as tonic, manufactured by the Church to temporarily enhance his combat performance, though overdosing has severely detrimental health effects. In addition, he carries Aegis, specialized flashbangs designed to blind vampires. His combat style relies on speed, agility, and dexterity rather than brute strength, using clever tactics to provoke opponents into leaving themselves open to his attacks.
