Description
Chloé d'Apchier is a vampire from Jun Mochizuki's manga and anime series The Case Study of Vanitas, serving as a central figure in the Gévaudan incident arc. Despite being over two hundred years old, she appears as a short, prepubescent girl with pale skin, a round face, thin eyebrows, a small nose, and thick-lashed gray eyes. Her most distinctive features are her wavy, silvery-gray hair, which frames her face and falls freely to about ear level, with longer bangs parted at the center. Her youthful appearance contrasts sharply with her age and the immense power she wields.

Chloé is the Marquise of the d'Apchier family and the sole survivor of her bloodline. Her existence as a vampire has been a closely guarded secret for centuries. Originally born human, she was turned into a vampire during the Babel incident, an event that fundamentally rewrote the rules of the world. After her transformation, her human family faked her death and hid her away, secretly devoting themselves to finding a way to reverse her condition and restore her humanity. This desire to cure her, while born of love, ultimately isolated her. Her father instructed her never to go outside, and the family's centuries-long quest to make her human again sent the implicit message that her existence as a vampire was something shameful or wrong that needed to be fixed.

This long period of seclusion shaped Chloé's personality. On the surface, she can appear cold and aloof, but this demeanor masks a fundamentally kind nature and a deep sense of responsibility as the head of her house. She is known to be curious about outsiders and enjoys spending time outdoors, walking in the woods, despite her long years of being told to hide. She is also fiercely protective of those she considers her allies and friends, described as having a jealous personality that will not forgive anyone who harms them. Living for over two centuries, she possesses a maturity and knowledge that allowed her to resist external mental influences, but this same long life has been filled with profound loneliness and grief.

Chloé's role in the story is as the legendary Beast of Gévaudan, a monstrous creature that terrorized the French countryside and became the catalyst for one of the first cooperative, though unsuccessful, hunts between humans and vampires. She lives in a castle hidden within the Silver Forest of Gévaudan, earning her the title of the Silver Witch. While the beast attacks are attributed to her, the truth is more complex. The d'Apchier family, for generations, had been researching the World Formula, the underlying code of reality. They eventually created a machine known as the World Formula Alteration Engine, or the Alternate Engine. Chloé continued this research alone after her family died out, and activating this machine led to her transformation or connection to the Beast.

Her key relationships are tragic and deeply influential. She formed a close friendship with August Ruthven, a vampire who visited her over the years and brought her a young girl named Jeanne to care for. Chloé acted as a guardian and teacher to Jeanne during her brief stay, playing games and giving her lessons. This bond makes later events particularly painful. After the war between humans and vampires escalated, a bitter and wounded Ruthven returned to Chloé, no longer as a friend but as a desperate man. He demanded she give him her family's research, and when she refused, he attacked her, sinking his teeth into her neck and shattering their centuries-old friendship. This betrayal was a devastating blow. Another crucial relationship is with Jean-Jacques Chastel, a young vampire who becomes her devoted companion and lover, sharing her long and lonely existence. He is deeply loyal to her and plays a key role in the events surrounding the Beast of Gévaudan.

Chloé's motivations are rooted in a complex mix of duty, loneliness, and a deep-seated desire for acceptance. For many years, she continued her family's research out of a sense of obligation. However, it is revealed that she never truly wished to be human again. More than anything, she simply wanted to be loved and accepted by her family for what she was. This unfulfilled wish left her emotionally vulnerable. Eventually, Chloé made a pact with Naenia, a shadowy entity that corrupts vampires into curse-bearers. She willingly gave Naenia her true name in exchange for having her deepest wish granted. This was not an act of madness but a form of resignation; she had grown tired of her isolated existence and the fear that she would only ever be a monster, capable of harming those she cared about, such as Jeanne.

Her development throughout the Gévaudan arc shows her at the end of her long rope, a tragic figure who has accepted her monstrous fate. She does not see herself as a victim but has actively chosen her path, deciding to activate the Alternate Engine and fully embrace her role as a curse-bearer, seemingly seeking an end to her sorrow. Ultimately, her character arc is about the devastating consequences of isolation, the pain of unfulfilled love, and the immense burden of outliving everyone she once knew.

As a vampire, Chloé possesses the standard physical enhancements of her kind, including superhuman strength, speed, and endurance. In her cursed form as the Beast of Gévaudan, she resembles a giant wolf-like creature with spiked fur and multiple eyes, capable of rapid healing. However, her most notable abilities stem from her family's research and her pact with Naenia. The World Formula Alteration Engine, which she knows how to operate better than anyone, allows her to manipulate the very rules of reality. Furthermore, her malnomen, the curse she received from Naenia in exchange for her true name, is called Millie, the Theater of Ice and Snow. This power allows her to create a vast, enclosed space that generates an entire world based on the memories of those trapped within, including re-creations of people from her past. Her power is so great that this domain can expand to cover nearly all of Gévaudan. At its most dangerous state, her malnomen grants even more destructive abilities, warping gravity, turning Chloé into a formless, fog-like apparition, and allowing her to create and control wolf-like familiars made of black mist.
