Max is a male Boxer from Happy Kennel, familiar with the French Bulldog protagonist before its adoption and renaming. His defining trait is an intense preoccupation with food, with milk being his favorite. Though initially shown as somewhat capable in his first appearance, later episodes depict him as clumsy and prone to causing problems for the group of traveling dogs.

His story becomes more central in episode 8 after his own adoption. During this episode, a burglar twice breaks into his owner's house. Max, along with Freddy and Dach, is found inside the damaged house. This discovery leads his owner to expel him, forcing Max to join Freddy and Dach on their journey.
