Description
Max serves as the apparent leader of the four Neon Genesis Junior High Students. Standing 200 cm tall and weighing 111 kg with blue eyes and shoulder-length blue hair, he possesses an imposing physical presence contrasted by a gentle personality. He exhibits strong leadership qualities and a deep sense of responsibility toward his team. Max actively supports Yuta Hibiki's romantic feelings for Rikka Takarada, finding the situation both vexing and encouraging.
He first appears with his teammates after Anti defeats Gridman and Calibur, inviting themselves into the Junk shop already aware of Gridman's survival. During the ensuing rematch, Max transforms into the Assist Weapon Battle Tracto Max by declaring "Battle Tracto Max!", equipped with Tanker Cannons on its back firing explosive shells. Later, he combines with Gridman, declared by "Heracles Combine! Max Gridman!", enhancing Gridman's arm strength. This fusion reveals rocket thrusters when Battle Tracto Max's wheels recede and enables powerful techniques: the wide-diameter Max Grid Beam fired from clasped hands and shoulder cannons, and the rocket-boosted Super Lightning Kick finisher.
Max remains observant throughout events, noting kaiju manifestations consistently occur around Yuta and his social circle. He demonstrates loyalty by defending Yuta, such as during interactions with Anosillus the 2nd and attacks by Anti. For the final battle against Alexis Kerib, Max and his teammates use Acceptors to reintegrate with Gridman, awakening the Hyper Agent's true form. After resolving the conflict, Max departs alongside Gridman back to the Hyper World.
Beyond the main series, Max appears in other Gridman Universe media. He returns in the film *Gridman Universe*, supporting during a crisis threatening the world's balance. Spin-off manga feature him in alternate scenarios: *Neon Genesis Junior High Students Diary* comically depicts daily life, and *SSSS.GRIDMAN: Neon Genesis Junior High Students Butler Cafe* shows him operating a butler cafe transformed from the Junk shop. Additional spin-offs like *Sengoku Gridman* place him in historical settings within alternate universes.
His design includes homages: his vest brooch references Transformers' Grimlock, while his Assist Weapon's color scheme nods to *Dinosaur Expedition Born Free*. His name derives from the Max Team mechas in *Brave Fighter Exkizer*. Voice dramas reveal a preference for an orderly lifestyle, avoiding bringing items like "Junk" home due to concerns about clashing with his furniture's color scheme.
