Description
Max is one of the four Neon Genesis Junior High Students, a covert group of Hyper Agents who appear as human youths in the SSSS.Gridman series and its sequel film Gridman Universe. He is the largest and most physically imposing member of the group, typically seen in black clothing and a metal mask covering the lower half of his face. While in human form, Max serves as a bodyguard and close protector of Yuta Hibiki, the host of the Hyper Agent Gridman. He often stays near Yuta to ensure the hero’s safety and provide practical support.

Max’s background is tied to his true nature as an Assist Weapon, a sentient fragment of Gridman’s own scattered memories that gained independence. In his natural form, he transforms into Battle Tracto Max, a heavy-duty vehicle-like weapon. When Gridman combines with Battle Tracto Max, the result is Heracles Combine Max Gridman, a configuration that grants Gridman a pair of massive forearms and dramatically increases his brute strength. In this combined state, Max can execute attacks such as the Max Grid Beam and the Super Lightning Kick.

Personality-wise, Max is pragmatic, level-headed, and reliable. He acts as a voice of reason among the Junior High Students, often offering calm advice to Yuta and others about both combat and personal matters. He is displayed as a capable older brother figure to the group, taking on a mentoring role. He is described as loyal and protective, with a strong sense of duty toward Gridman and the Gridman Alliance. He is not overtly emotional but shows care through his actions, such as helping Yuta with relationship advice or working alongside Rikka’s mother to repair equipment. His motivations are centered on fulfilling his mission to aid Gridman in fighting kaiju and to safeguard Yuta, whom he treats as a friend.

Within the story, Max plays a dual role: as a covert operative monitoring Yuta and as a direct combat asset. He frequently gathers intelligence on kaiju movements through computer systems and provides technical support to the team. During kaiju battles, he transforms into Battle Tracto Max and merges with Gridman, enabling the hero to overpower larger foes. Without Gridman’s presence, Max and the other Assist Weapons can combine among themselves to form the autonomous robot Powered Zenon, which relies on raw strength.

In Gridman Universe, Max receives a slight visual update with a shorter hairstyle, but his core traits remain unchanged. He continues to operate alongside his fellow Junior High Students and Gridman, participating in the crossover conflict that brings together characters from both SSSS.Gridman and SSSS.Dynazenon. His development is subtle; he maintains his role as the steady, protective pillar of the group, and his relationships with the other Assist Weapons—such as Borr, Vit, and the Samurai Calibur—remain cooperative and collegial. His connection to Gridman is one of unwavering loyalty, as he exists as a living extension of the hero’s will.

Notable abilities include enhanced strength, durability, and combat proficiency in human form, far beyond ordinary human limits. He can assume his massive Assist Weapon form at will and merge with Gridman to grant the hero superior physical power. The combination also grants access to specialized finishing moves. When fighting independently, his raw strength and endurance make him a formidable frontline asset. His tactical sense and technical knowledge further support the team outside of direct combat.
