Description
Yu-yu Kondō begins his story as a timid third-year junior high student in Kanazawa City, Kaga Province. Paralyzing shyness makes him unable to stand up to his two older sisters, who force him into cross-dressing for their hobbies. This results in public appearances where he wears feminine attire like wigs, dresses, and school uniforms, causing others to mistake him for a girl.
An invitation from Megumi Okura to the abandoned Wonder Hill amusement park changes his life. Wonder Hill serves as Team Blackout's base, and there Yu-yu witnesses his first Vanguard fight. Introduced to the card game by the team, he quickly connects with it, adopting a Dragon Empire deck centered on the "Trickstar" unit and its evolution mechanics (overDress and later X-overDress), symbolizing his latent potential. He possesses an implied ability to sense others' emotions, yet struggles deeply to voice his own feelings.
Involvement with Vanguard and Team Blackout sparks significant personal growth. Yu-yu gradually gains confidence, learns to stand up for himself and his teammates, and starts expressing his thoughts openly. Key moments include his desperate defense of the Blackout flag during Danji Momoyama's absence against Tohya Ebata, and his proactive efforts to help Tohya regain the team's trust after Tohya assumes leadership. Following Danji's departure to find Mirei Minae and Tohya's resignation to travel, Yu-yu, despite being one of the newest and youngest members, becomes Team Blackout's official leader during his high school years.
As leader, he confronts challenges, particularly from the Uniformers group in later arcs. His strong opposition to their ideology—sacrificing individuality for strength—slowly twists into self-righteousness. He becomes fixated on defeating them and "saving" their member Shirogane (later revealed as Zakusa), developing an arrogance mirroring the ideals he despises. This culminates in a pivotal loss to Shirogane, forcing Yu-yu to confront his own hubris and its negative impact. After achieving victory over the Uniformers' leader, Gui, and reaching a mutual understanding with it, Yu-yu decides to leave Team Blackout. He passes leadership to Megumi and departs Wonder Hill to explore unseen parts of the world.
Yu-yu's Vanguard gameplay reflects his evolving identity. He transitions from relying solely on newer X-overDress mechanics to integrating them with his original overDress techniques, symbolizing his acceptance that progress doesn't require rejecting his past. His relationships, especially his deep admiration and trust for mentor Danji, play a crucial role in his development, reinforcing themes of self-acceptance and discovering hidden facets of character through connection.
