Description
Onsen-Mark is the enigmatic homeroom teacher of Class 2-4 at Tomobiki High School, his true name never revealed. Universally called “Onsen-sensei,” his role as an English teacher and alumnus of Tomobiki High suggests the plausible Westernized name Mark Onsen, hinting at a *nikkei* heritage. Tasked with student discipline, he collaborates with Shūtarō Mendō and top students to form the covert Shadow Disciplinary Council, vigilantly enforcing rules.

Though stern, he demonstrates earnest care for his pupils, doggedly continuing lessons despite frequent classroom explosions, supernatural incidents, or rampant chaos. His relationship with students like Ataru Moroboshi deteriorates into rivalry, resulting in slapstick clashes or unintended entanglement in their antics. Manga canon grants him a wife, child, and elderly mother, whereas the anime presents him as single, residing alone, with subtle hints of affection for Sakura, the school nurse. The film *Beautiful Dreamer* expands his arc, depicting a dream life with a Sakura-like wife and casting him as the initial discoverer of their illusory reality—a revelation cut short by Mujaki’s intervention.

His attire consistently features the onsen symbol (♨), emblazoned across his suit in the manga but restricted to his tie and jacket back in the anime. Unfazed by disorder, he adapts lessons to ruined classrooms or outdoor settings, though efforts frequently culminate in absurdity, such as being catapulted skyward by a colossal mushroom.

Debuting earlier in the manga than the anime’s Episode 36, his portrayal varies across adaptations: Viz Media’s English translation renames him “Hot Springs Emblem,” directly translating the ♨ motif. As an English instructor, he sporadically injects song lyrics into lectures. Despite tonal shifts between manga, anime seasons, films, and OVAs, his essence persists—a disciplinarian devoted to his role, yet perpetually ensnared in comedic misfortune.
