Description
Ryōko Mendō serves as the younger sister to Shūtarō Mendō, heir of the immense Mendō conglomerate. She attends Seiran High School for Girls as a second-year student. Her appearance features long brown hair usually tied back with decorative bows, square bangs covering her forehead, and brown eyes. She presents a lovely, demure, and well-mannered exterior, maintaining an innocent facade. Yet beneath this surface lies a highly manipulative, sadistic, and mischievous personality. Her primary amusement stems from orchestrating elaborate schemes to torment others, especially her overprotective brother Shūtarō, fueled by sibling rivalry and privileged boredom seeking chaotic entertainment.
Her relationship with Shūtarō intertwines genuine familial affection with relentless psychological manipulation. She exploits his protective instincts to lure him into humiliating or dangerous scenarios—like delivering spoiled bentō after a two-day ox-cart journey or fabricating crises targeting his phobias. Despite his vigilance, Shūtarō consistently falls victim due to his sense of brotherly duty. Beyond her brother, she subjects childhood acquaintance Tobimaro Mizunokōji to physical torment, trapping him in high places or pushing him into ponds, while claiming romantic interest despite his overt loathing and attempts to flee. She manipulates Ataru Moroboshi by exploiting his lecherous tendencies to provoke Shūtarō, viewing Ataru as a compliant "toy."
Her methods emphasize theatricality and disproportionate retaliation. She employs tools like grenades, bombs, hypnosis, voodoo dolls, and booby traps, often executed by a retinue of kuroko—kabuki-style stagehands in black veils. These servants transport her via palanquins, oxcarts, or horse costumes and rig explosives in objects like Christmas cakes or trees. After unleashing havoc, she feigns grief over victims while remaining unharmed. Her interests include occult practices like black magic and collecting esoteric artifacts, such as a sakura tree she treats as a pet by feeding it sake and octopus legs, notably sourced from Shūtarō’s pets.
Her role remains consistent as a chaotic antagonist focused on tormenting Shūtarō and manipulating peripheral characters through calculated pranks and violence.
