Description
Yasutomo Arakita's promising baseball future as a middle school pitcher ended abruptly during his second year with an elbow injury, preventing his prefectural tournament debut. After recovery, his diminished pitching skills drew mockery from teammates, fostering a deep cynicism. Seeking escape, he enrolled at Hakone Academy specifically because it lacked a baseball club. His first year was marked by anger and isolation; he rejected friendships and reacted violently when a cat he admired fled. This frustration peaked during an encounter with Juichi Fukutomi. After Fukutomi stated cycling represented forward movement, Arakita insulted him, knocked over his bicycle, and pushed him down. Fukutomi challenged him to a race: Arakita's moped against Fukutomi's bicycle. Fukutomi's decisive victory shattered Arakita's worldview.
Determined to understand his loss, Arakita secretly attempted to ride Fukutomi's bicycle at night but repeatedly failed. Fukutomi confronted him, advising him to "look forward" and relinquish his past. He offered Arakita a choice: return the bicycle or join the cycling club. After symbolically cutting his hair, Arakita joined, vowing to reach the "top" of cycling at the Inter High despite upperclassmen's skepticism. He declared his intent to overturn their reality, having witnessed its malleability firsthand. His early training was restricted to two-hour sessions on rollers using a heavy borrowed road bike. He remained antagonistic toward other members, prone to physical outbursts though often too exhausted to act. When asked why he cycled, he asserted it was to prove his existence and test his limits. Shinkai Hayato noted Fukutomi favored "weird ones" with strong wills, leaving Arakita confused about being liked.
His first race bypassed outdoor practice entirely. Fukutomi instructed him to find him at the front if he had questions. Driven to prove himself, Arakita reached Fukutomi within four laps but collapsed from exhaustion before asking anything, dropping out immediately after. Later, during the Manazuru Circuit race, Arakita became enraged when seniors mocked Fukutomi's ambition. Upon learning he would be Fukutomi's assist, he became determined to win. Riding Fukutomi's bike—which he was told he could keep afterward—he followed orders to draft behind Fukutomi until the final stretch, where he sprinted to first place. This victory marked a turning point; he acknowledged he could not have progressed without Fukutomi, adopting the nickname "Fuku-chan" instead of "Iron Mask".
As a third-year, Arakita served as an all-rounder and Fukutomi's primary assist. He displayed impatience with media obligations and scolded first-year Sangaku Manami for missing an interview. He also directed Manami to scout Sohoku's training camp. During the Inter High, he supported Fukutomi in the ace competition. On Day 1, he dismissed claims about Sohoku's second climber, Onoda Sakamichi, until Onoda arrived unexpectedly. Later, 4km from the goal, he assisted Fukutomi against Sohoku's Kinjou Shingo and Imaizumi Shunsuke. He taunted Imaizumi as a "good boy" lacking the wildness for the final stretch, but Imaizumi's aggressive surge forced a neck-and-neck battle until the 500m launch mark. Exhaustion prevented Arakita from countering Midousuji Akira's surprise attack. After Hakone tied for first, he expressed dissatisfaction at not winning decisively, though Fukutomi reassured him about Day 3.
Post-Inter High, Arakita initially resisted Jinpachi Toudou's suggestion for a third-year trip but agreed when framed as showing gratitude to Fukutomi. The trio chose a theme park featuring a lion mascot resembling Fukutomi, though Arakita complained about its underwhelming appearance upon arrival. Arakita is characterized by competitiveness and frequent complaints about fatigue, yet he pushes himself relentlessly in races. He uses the affectionate suffix "-chan" for those he respects, such as "Fuku-chan," reflecting his acknowledgment of their strength.
